1994 Sun Bowl
The 1994 Sun Bowl was a college football bowl game played on December 29, 1994. The game pitted the unranked Texas Longhorns against the No. 19 North Carolina Tar Heels. The Tar Heels were led by eventual Texas head coach Mack Brown. The game was a seesaw offensive battle. Texas, down 31–21 midway through the fourth quarter, mounted a comeback to gain a 35–31 victory, with Priest Holmes's leap into the endzone proving to be the winning points. A record 50,612 attended this game, a high for both the bowl game and the stadium. This was the first time since 1988 that the Sun Bowl was played under its original name after five years of title sponsorship from John Hancock Insurance. Southwest Conference
The Southwest Conference (SWC) was an NCAA Division I college athletic conference in the United States that existed from 1914 to 1996. Composed primarily of schools from Texas, at various times the conference included schools from Oklahoma and Arkansas. For most of its history, the core members of the conference were Texas-based schools plus one in Arkansas: Baylor University, Rice University, Southern Methodist University, Texas A&M University, Texas Christian University, Texas Tech University, the University of Arkansas and the University of Texas at Austin. Bowl Coalition
The College Football Bowl Coalition was formed through an agreement among Division I-A college football bowl games and conferences for the purpose of forcing a national championship game between the top two teams and to provide quality bowl game matchups for the champions of its member conferences. It was established for the 1992 season after there were co-national champions for both 1990 and 1991. The agreement was in place for the 1992, 1993, and 1994 college football seasons. Sun Bowl
The Sun Bowl is a college football bowl game that has been played since 1935 in the southwestern United States at El Paso, Texas. Along with the Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl, it is the second-oldest bowl game in the country, behind the Rose Bowl. Usually held near the end of December, games are played at the Sun Bowl stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at El Paso. Since 2011, it has featured teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the Pac-12 Conference. The 1994–95 NCAA football bowl games concluded the 1994 NCAA Division I-A football season. In the third and final year of the Bowl Coalition era, the Coalition failed to achieve its goal of a true national championship game between the nation's top two teams. The Coalition's designated championship game for the 1994 season, the 1995 Orange Bowl, pitted No. 1 Nebraska against No. 3 Miami (FL), while No. 2 Penn State was tied to the Rose Bowl as a member of the Big Ten Conference. 1994 Texas Longhorns Football Team
The 1994 Texas Longhorns football team represented the University of Texas at Austin during the 1994 NCAA Division I-A football season. They were represented in the Southwest Conference. They played their home games at Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas. The team was led by head coach John Mackovic. The Longhorns did not close the season with its traditional rivalry game vs. Texas A&M, due to NCAA probation which banned the Aggies from appearing on television. Texas instead closed the season with Baylor in a nationally televised game on Thanksgiving, having played A&M three weeks prior. The 1993 John Hancock Bowl was a college football postseason bowl game that featured the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Oklahoma Sooners. After holding sponsorship rights to the game since 1986, and also naming beginning in 1989, John Hancock Insurance’s licensing agreement ended following this game. The bowl reverted to its previous name, the Sun Bowl, for the next season.
