1994 Metro Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1994 Metro Conference Men's Basketball Tournament was held March 11–13 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi. Louisville defeated in the championship game, 69–61, to win their 10th Metro men's basketball tournament. The Cardinals received an automatic bid to the 1994 NCAA Tournament as the conference's lone representative. Format All seven of the conference's members participated. They were seeded based on regular season conference records, with the top team earning a bye into the semifinal round. The other six teams entered into the preliminary first round. Mississippi Coast Coliseum
Mississippi Coast Coliseum is an 11,500-seat reserved seating, 15,000 festival seating, multi-purpose arena in Biloxi, Mississippi. It was built in 1977. It hosted the WCW Beach Blast in 1993 and the Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament in 1992 and 1993. The Metro Conference men's basketball tournaments were contested there in 1990 and 1994. In addition, the rematch between legendary boxing former world heavyweight champion Larry Holmes and his fellow former world heavyweight champion Mike Weaver was held at the Coast Coliseum on November 17, 2000; Holmes winning by sixth-round technical knockout. The first concert held at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum was by Charley Pride on November 18, 1977, while the first rock band to perform was Blue Oyster Cult on April 16, 1978. Biloxi, Mississippi
Biloxi ( ; ) is a city in and one of two county seats of Harrison County, Mississippi, United States (the other being the adjacent city of Gulfport). The 2010 United States Census recorded the population as 44,054 and in 2019 the estimated population was 46,212. The area's first European settlers were French colonists. Denny Crum
Denzel Edwin "Denny" Crum (born March 2, 1937) is an American former men's college basketball coach at the University of Louisville from 1971 to 2001, compiling a record. He guided the Cardinals to two NCAA championships ( 1980, 1986) and six Final Fours. Honored in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame since 1994, Crum is one of the major figures in the history of sports in Kentucky and in college basketball in general. As the head coach at U of L, Crum is widely credited with pioneering the now-common strategy of scheduling tough non-conference match-ups early in the season in order to prepare his teams for March's NCAA tournament, where one defeat ends the season. Crum's prolific post-season play and calm demeanor earned him the monikers "Mr. March" and his most well-known nickname, " Cool Hand Luke." 1994 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1994 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 17, 1994, and ended with the championship game on April 4 in Charlotte, North Carolina, played at Charlotte Coliseum. A total of 63 games were played. The Final Four consisted of Arkansas, making their fifth trip and first since 1990, Arizona, making their second ever trip and first since 1988, Florida, making their first ever trip, and Duke, making their sixth trip in the last seven tournaments.
