1993 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 6 February 1993 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. The three-term Labor government, led by Premier Dr Carmen Lawrence since 12 February 1990, was defeated by the Liberal- National coalition, led by Opposition Leader Richard Court since 12 May 1992. The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House, Perth, Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. Electoral District Of Floreat
Floreat was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1968 to 1996. The district was based in the inner northwestern suburbs of Perth and was created in the 1966 redistribution. First contested at the 1968 state election, it was won by Liberal candidate Andrew Mensaros, who served as a minister in a number of portfolios under Sir Charles Court and Ray O'Connor from 1974 to 1983, and as shadow attorney-general amongst other responsibilities thereafter. Clive Brown
Clive Morris Brown (born 31 December 1946) is an Australian former politician and minister in the Gallop Government. Brown was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly between 1993 and 2005 for the electorates of Bassendean and previously a member for the Morley from 1993 until its abolition in 1996. Biography Brown was born in 1946 in London, England. He arrived in Western Australia as a child in 1956. Before entering politics, Brown worked in the trade union movement. Frank Donovan (politician)
Francis Anthony "Frank" Donovan (born 28 January 1947) is a former Australian politician who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1987 to 1993. A Vietnam veteran, Donovan worked as a social worker before entering politics. He was a member of the Labor Party until 1991, when he resigned to sit as an independent. Early life Donovan was born in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, England, to Cecelia Mary (née Fletcher) and James Francis Donovan. In 1964, after leaving school, he moved to Australia and enlisted in the Australian Army. He served a tour of duty with the 5th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment during the Vietnam War, and on his return was posted to the Balmoral Naval Hospital in Sydney as a welfare officer. Electoral District Of Morley
Morley is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. Morley existed as an electoral district from 1974 to 1996, and was restored as an electorate name in 2008. Between 1983 and 1989 it was known was Morley-Swan. The district is situated in the northern suburbs of Perth. Geography Situated in the densely populated inner northern suburbs of Perth, the district covers the entirety of the suburbs of Nollamara and Noranda; and parts of Beechboro, Dianella and Morley. History Morley was first created for the 1974 state election. At the 1983 state election, it was renamed Morley-Swan with the abolition of Swan. Kim Hames
Kim Desmond Hames (born 24 March 1953) is an Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1993 to 2001 and from 2005 to 2017. He served as a minister in the governments of Richard Court and Colin Barnett, and was deputy premier to Barnett from 2008 to 2016. Hames retired from parliament at the 2017 state election. Early life Hames was born in Perth to Eunice (née Jackson) and Reginald Hames. He attended Guildford Grammar School before going on to the University of Western Australia to study medicine. Keith Wilson (Western Australian Politician)
Keith James Wilson (born 5 September 1936) is an Australian politician. He was born in Kalgoorlie to miner James Wilson and Barbara Jean McKenzie. He attended local public schools and became a teacher, graduating in 1955. After a period teaching at Mount Barker, he trained for the Anglican clergy from 1959 to 1961. From 1961 to 1965 he was the assistant priest for the Scarborough parish, and from 1965 to 1967 he taught in the United Kingdom. On 24 August 1968, he married Angela Joy Hankin, with whom he had two sons. From 1969 he was an Anglican clergyman at Balga. In 1977 he was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Dianella; he represented this seat until 1983, Nollamara until 1989, and then Dianella again until 1993. He was the first clergyman elected to the Parliament of Western Australia following a change to the constitution. Electoral District Of Dianella
Dianella was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1977 to 1983 and again from 1989 to 1996. The district was based in the northern suburbs of Perth. History Dianella was first contested at the 1977 state election. The seat was won by Labor candidate Rev Keith Wilson, who became the first clergyman to win Parliamentary office since changes to the electoral laws a few years earlier which lifted a ban on them. The seat was renamed Nollamara two terms later, ahead of the 1983 state election. Dianella was created as a new seat further south from its original incarnation for the 1989 state election, with Wilson successfully transferring to the seat, serving also as Minister for Health under Premiers Peter Dowding and Carmen Lawrence. John Howard Dadley Day (born 24 December 1955) is a West Australian state politician. He was a Liberal member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1993 to 2017. Personal life Day was born on 24 December 1955 in Middle Swan, Western Australia to John and Myfanwy Day. His father, who survived the Second Battle of El Alamein, died when Day was 17 years old. Attending Guildford Grammar School, Day later completed a Bachelor of Science, and a Bachelor of Dental Science at the University of Western Australia going on to work at the Perth Dental Hospital as well as other clinical situations including Canning Vale Prison. Ian Thompson (politician)
Ian David Thompson (1 September 1935 – 2 December 2009) was an Australian politician who served as Speaker of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. Thompson was born in Morawa and left school in year 8, working as a carpenter, fitter and mechanic. In 1971 he was elected as the Liberal member for Darling Range. He transferred to Kalamunda in 1974 and back to Darling Range in 1989. He held various shadow ministries during the 1980s. In the 1970s he was one of a group of Liberal MPs to oppose the closure of the Tresillian disabled children's home; Thompson claimed Premier Sir Charles Court blamed him for the party disunity. In 1977 Thompson was elected Speaker of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, and was required to use his casting vote after the National Country Party withdrew its support for a government bill to limit the ability of illiterate people to vote. Darling Range is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is based to the east and south-east of Perth. Geography Darling Range is situated in the outer east and south-east of Perth. It is a mixture of suburbia and hinterland, falling inside the Metropolitan Region Scheme and running along most of its southern and eastern boundary. The district covers all of the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale as well as the less urbanised parts of the city of Armadale. History Darling Range was first created for the 1950 state election.
