1993 European Tour
The 1993 European Tour, titled as the 1993 Volvo Tour for sponsorship reasons, was the 22nd official season of golf tournaments known as the PGA European Tour. The season was made up of 38 tournaments counting for the Order of Merit, and five non-counting "Approved Special Events". The Order of Merit was won by Scotland's Colin Montgomerie for the first time, overtaking Nick Faldo with victory in the season ending Volvo Masters. Changes for 1993 There were few changes from the previous season, with the addition of the Madeira Island Open and a ProServ tournament in Bologna replacing the Volvo Open di Firenze. A new tournament was planned for South Africa but was not finalised. The cancellation of the Monte Carlo Open in February prompted rescheduling of the Irish Open to ensure there was no gap in the schedule prior to The Open Championship. Bernhard Langer
Bernhard Langer (; born 27 August 1957) is a German professional golfer. He is a two-time Masters champion and was one of the world's leading golfers throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 1986, he became the sport's first official number one ranked player following the creation of the OWGR. Langer is one of five golfers who have won professional golf events on all six continents where golf is played. He has victories on all the premiere tours, with 42 wins on the European Tour ( 2nd most all-time), three on the PGA Tour, and numerous international victories; including wins on the Japan Golf Tour, Asian Tour, Australasian Tour, and the Tour de las Américas. Honda Open
The Deutsche Bank Players Championship of Europe was an annual 72-hole stroke play professional golf tournament for men. It was last played in Germany and was part of the European Tour schedule. The tournament was founded in 1992 as the Honda Open and acquired the tag of The Players Championship of Europe or TPC of Europe in 1995. It was last played at Gut Kaden. The prize fund in 2007 was €3.6 million, which put it in the top group of European Tour events outside the major championships and World Golf Championships, but not at the head of the list. The parallels between this tournament and the PGA Tour's Players Championship are not very strong. David Gilford
David Gilford (born 14 September 1965) is an English professional golfer. Gilford was born in Crewe. In 1981, aged just 15, he won the Carris Trophy, English Boys Under-18 Open Amateur Stroke-Play Championship, at Moor Park. He won the English Amateur in 1984 and turned professional in 1986. Gilford has six wins on the European Tour, all of which came between 1991 and 1994. He finished in the top ten of the European Tour Order of Merit twice, placing 9th in 1991 and 7th in 1994. He played in the Ryder Cup in 1991 and 1995. After reaching 50, Gilford played on the European Senior Tour, playing his first event in late 2015. Having been cancelled in 1988, it returned to the schedule in 1992 and was held annually until 2001. This was the second European Tour event in North Africa after the Tunisian Open, but the tour eventually left North Africa to focus its global expansion on the established golf markets of South Africa and Australasia and the major growth region of Asia. Johnnie Walker Classic
The Johnnie Walker Classic was a European Tour golf tournament which was played in the Asia-Pacific region. Johnnie Walker is a brand name and the owners have a long history of tournament sponsorship. They also sponsored the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles which was a European Tour event played in Scotland. The event was originally called the Johnnie Walker Asian Classic. There was a tournament already called the Johnnie Walker Classic in Australia, but when that event ceased in 1992, the word Asian was dropped from the name. Wayne Westner
Wayne Brett Westner (28 September 1961 4 January 2017) was a South African golfer. He was twice winner of the South African Open and also won twice on the European Tour. In partnership with Ernie Els, they won the 1996 World Cup of Golf, played at the Erinvale Golf Club near Cape Town. Els won the individual event with Westner second and the pair won the team event by 18 shots. Early life Westner was born in Johannesburg. Professional career In 1981, he turned professional. He won several events in his home country, including two South African Opens. The Dubai Desert Classic is a European Tour golf tournament held on Majlis course at Emirates Golf Club in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. In 1999 and 2000 it was held at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, all other editions have been held at Emirates Golf Club. Mark James (golfer)
Mark Hugh James (born 28 October 1953) is an English professional golfer who had a long career on the European Tour and captained Europe in the 1999 Ryder Cup. He has also played senior golf on the European Senior Tour and the U.S.-based Champions Tour. Early life and amateur career James was born in Manchester, England and educated at Stamford School. Official World Golf Ranking
The Official World Golf Ranking is a system for rating the performance level of professional golfers. It was started in 1986. The rankings are based on a player's position in individual tournaments (i.e. not pairs or team events) over a "rolling" two-year period. New rankings are calculated each week. During 2018, nearly 400 tournaments on 20 tours were covered by the ranking system. All players competing in these tournaments are included in the rankings. In 2022, 23 tours factored into the world rankings. As well as being of general interest, the rankings have an additional importance, in that they are used as one of the qualifying criteria for entry into a number of leading tournaments.
