1993 Cleveland Browns Season
The 1993 Cleveland Browns season was the team's 44th season with the National Football League. This season was notable for coach Bill Belichick deciding to bench, and then ultimately release, longtime starting quarterback Bernie Kosar in favor of Vinny Testaverde. Kosar resurfaced during the season with the Dallas Cowboys, when he was part of the eventual Super Bowl champions as a fill-in for injured quarterback Troy Aikman. The Browns get off to a 5–2 start despite the quarterback controversy. Prior to the start of the season the Browns signed free agent quarterback Vinny Testaverde. Originally Testaverde was supposed to back-up his former University of Miami teammate Kosar. The 1993 Detroit Lions season was the 64th season in franchise history. The Lions improved from the 1992 season, and finished 10-6 and winning the NFC Central Division for the second time in three years. In the playoffs, the Lions were upset in the Wild Card Round at home to the Green Bay Packers on a Brett Favre 40-yard touchdown pass to Sterling Sharpe with 55 seconds left. Pat Hill
Lawrence Patrick Hill (born December 17, 1951) is an American football coach, former player, and broadcaster. He served as the head football coach at Fresno State from 1997 until his dismissal following the 2011 season. In 15 seasons as head coach as Fresno State, he led the Bulldogs to a record of 112–80, 11 bowl game appearances, and a share of the 1999 Western Athletic Conference title. Kirk James Ferentz (born August 1, 1955) is an American football coach. He is the current head football coach at the University of Iowa, a position he has held since the 1999 season. From 1990 to 1992, Ferentz was the head football coach at the University of Maine. Mike Sheppard (born October 29, 1951) is an American football coach and former player. Sheppard was an assistant at Idaho State when it won the NCAA Division I-AA title in 1981. He was a wide receiver for the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen when they won the 1971 NAIA Division II Football National Championship. In the national championship game, Sheppard was named the defensive player of the game. In 1983 as offensive coordinator at Kansas, he helped guide quarterback Frank Seurer to 2,789 yards and 14 touchdowns. Running backs Kerwin Bell, E. J. The 1993 Los Angeles Rams season was the team's 56th season in the National Football League and the 48th in Los Angeles. The Rams looked to improve on their 6–10 record from 1992 and make the playoffs for the first time since 1989. However, the season started off horribly, as the Rams were stomped 36–6 by the Packers in Green Bay in their first game. The Rams, however, rebounded with a 27–0 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers at home. This was followed by a 20–10 loss to the New York Giants and a 28–13 win over the Houston Oilers in Houston. Jay Hilgenberg
Jay Walter Hilgenberg (born March 21, 1959) is an American former professional football player who was a center in the NFL. He played for the Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns and the New Orleans Saints from 1981 to 1993. He is the son of All-American University of Iowa center Jerry Hilgenberg and nephew of Minnesota Vikings linebacker Wally Hilgenberg.
