Television In New Zealand
Television in New Zealand was introduced in 1960 as a state-run service. The broadcasting sector was deregulated in 1989, when the Government allowed competition to the state-owned Television New Zealand (TVNZ). There are currently three forms of broadcast television: a terrestrial ( DVB-T) service provided by Freeview; as well as satellite ( DVB-S) and internet streaming (IPTV) services provided nationwide by both Freeview and Sky. The first nationwide digital television service was launched in December 1998 by Sky, who had a monopoly on digital satellite television until the launch of Freeview's nationwide digital satellite service in May 2007. The Freeview digital terrestrial service launched on 14 April 2008. A pay digital terrestrial service was launched in 2012 by Igloo and closed in 2017; this was a joint venture between Sky and TVNZ and provided Freeview UHF aerial channels along with eleven Sky channels. ''Wheel of Fortune'' was a long-running New Zealand television game show that was last hosted by television personality Jason Gunn and co-host Sonia Gray. It was broadcast on TV2 from 1991 to 1996 and on TV ONE from 2008 to 2009. History 1991–1996 original The original New Zealand version of the popular American game show Wheel of Fortune was first broadcast in February 1991, on TVNZ channel TV2, at 5:30pm. ''The Railway Dragon'' is a 1989 Canadian television animated film. Leslie Nielsen featured as the narrator. The half-hour special premiered in the US on the Disney Channel. Plot A little girl named Emily knows that there is something special in the railway tunnel close to her home, despite no one else thinking so. One day she decides to see for herself, exploring around the tunnel. After a brief scare due to a large rat, she tries to give it some food but the rat instead runs down a burrow. Emily accidentally slides down the burrow while investigating it and is amazed when she comes face to face with a centuries-old dragon. The dragon is at first grouchy and not happy with her been in his lair, which is full of 'treasure', although this is mainly discarded items from the trains. Brum (TV Series)
''Brum'' (), is a British children's television series about the adventures of a small, sentient vintage car. The series was originally narrated by Toyah Willcox, who also provided the voice for Brum and all the characters. The show aired for three series between 1991 and 2002 with two revived CGI series airing on YouTube in 2016. The show was first aired on BBC One on the children's block, Children's BBC (CBBC) and later on CBeebies. TVNZ 1 ( mi, Te Reo Tātaki Tahi) is the first national television channel owned and operated by the state-owned broadcaster Television New Zealand ( TVNZ). It is the oldest television broadcaster in New Zealand, starting out from 1960 as independent channels in the four main centres of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, networking in 1969 to become NZBC TV (although the individual facilities retained their call signs into the 1970s). The network was renamed Television One (TV ONE, stylized as oɴe) in 1975 upon the break-up of the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation, and became a part of TVNZ in 1980 when Television One and South Pacific Television (now sister channel TVNZ 2) merged. It targets a younger audience than its sister channel, TVNZ 1. TVNZ 2's line up consists of dramas, comedies, and reality TV shows. ''Spider'' is a British musical children's television mini-series made by ''Hibbert Ralph Entertainment'' for the BBC, that was originally aired on BBC One from 26 September to 30 December 1991. It followed the adventures of a spider, the protagonist, and a young boy (although the boy was only present in eleven of the thirteen episodes). The stories were told through song, and performed by Jeff Stevenson with his children, Casey and Holly, singing backing vocals. The styles of music featured in the episodes vary from rock 'n roll to haunting and melancholic tunes, and were produced by Rick Cassman at Triple X Studios. A BBC video entitled ''Spider! – I'm Only Scary 'cos I'm Hairy!'' (BBCV 4753), which contained all thirteen episodes, was also released in 1992. It was re-released on DVD in 2004. ''Face the Music'' was a weekly game show from New Zealand that aired on TV2 (New Zealand), TV2 from 1992-1994, hosted by TV presenter Simon Barnett, along with Dwayne Francks as co-host. Jeoff Barraclough was the announcer (as well as music coordinator). Round 1 Three contestants competed per episode, one a returning champion. In round 1, four categories were presented to the players, each containing four notes, with each note ranging from 50 to 100 points (in 5-point increments). A song was played, and the first contestant to buzz-in and identify the song got the points. A wrong answer meant the player was out for the next song, though, and the other two could guess. Occasionally, they would answer a question related to the song rather than trying to guess the song itself. Some notes had a bonus question attached—if answered correctly, the player could double the value by correctly answering a question related to the song or the artist.
