1992 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships
The 1st IAAF World Half Marathon Championships was held on September 19 and 20, 2001 in Tyneside, United Kingdom, UK, and was run simultaneously with that year's Great North Run. A total of 204 athletes, 96 men, 84 women and 24 juniors, from 36 countries took part. Complete results were published. Though this competition was the first of its kind, it followed on from the 1991 IAAF World Women's Road Race Championships, which was held over the 15K run, 15K distance. IAAF
World Athletics, formerly known as the International Amateur Athletic Federation (from 1912 to 2001) and International Association of Athletics Federations (from 2001 to 2019, both abbreviated as the IAAF) is the international governing body for the sport of athletics, covering track and field, cross country running, road running, race walking, mountain running, and ultra running. Included in its charge are the standardization of rules and regulations for the sports, certification of athletic facilities, recognition and management of world records, and the organisation and sanctioning of athletics competitions, including the World Athletics Championships. Liz McColgan
Elizabeth Nuttall (née Lynch, formerly McColgan; born 24 May 1964) is a Scottish former middle-distance and long-distance track and road-running athlete. She won the gold medal for the 10,000 metres at the 1991 World Championships, and a silver medal over the same distance at the 1988 Olympic Games. She was also a two-time gold medallist over the distance at the Commonwealth Games, as well as winning the 1992 World Half Marathon Championships, 1991 New York City Marathon, 1992 Tokyo Marathon and 1996 London Marathon. Her 10,000 metres best of 30:57.07 set in 1991, moved her to second on the world all-time list at that time and stood as the Scottish record until 2022, when it was broken by her daughter Eilish McColgan. Francesco Panetta
Francesco Panetta (born 10 January 1963 in Siderno) is a former Italian long-distance runner, who won several medals at international championships in the 1980s. Career Panetta's greatest achievement was the victory at the 1987 World Championships in the 3000m steeplechase in Rome. In the previous year Panetta won a silver medal at the 1986 European Championships in Stuttgart, only narrowly losing to the East German runner Hagen Melzer. At the 1988 Olympic Games, Panetta finished ninth in the 3000m steeplechase. Panetta won a gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase at the 1990 European Championships in Split. Throughout his career, Panetta set several Italian records (including 3000m and 10000m). In 1987 he ran the 3000m steeplechase in 8:08.57 min which is the current Italian national record. Koichi Fujita
was a Japanese guitarist, lyricist, composer, record producer, and businessman. He was known for producing for Kiyotaka Sugiyama, Carlos Toshiki, Toshiki Kadomatsu, Momoko Kikuchi, and Lazy. Biography Early life and career Fujita was born on March 20, 1947, in Chiba, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. As a child, he loved playing football, but spent most of his days alone because his mother died and his father remarried. He attended Chiba Prefectural Chiba High School where he heard a Beatles record, and bought an electric guitar. He was scouted by Watanabe Productions and debuted in 1967 as a member of Out Cast. He served as the guitarist after the previous guitarist, Shuichi Katagiri, left the band shortly before the band's debut. He left in the summer of 1967 after writing three songs, and would form The Love with Yuji Takamiya, Arai Hideo, Yasufumi Tajima (known as "Fumio Shimada" and "Heckel Tajima"), and Hiroshi Kobata. Xolile Yawa (born 29 September 1962 in Lady Frere, Eastern Cape) is a retired athlete from South Africa - ZA. He specialised in long-distance running, including marathons. Paul Evans (athlete)
Paul William Evans (born 13 April 1961) is a former distance runner from England, who ran in the 10000m track final at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He took up running at 25, having been a footballer. He was a member of Belgrave Harriers and the City of Norwich Athletics Club. Evans came second in the 1996 Great North Run, third in the 1996 London Marathon, and won the 1996 Chicago Marathon at the age of 35. His 2:08:52 in Chicago places him fifth on the UK all-time marathon list. Cosmas Ndeti
Cosmas Ndeti (born 24 November 1971) is a three-time winner of the Boston Marathon. He was the winner of the 1993, 1994, and 1995 races. He set the course record in 1994 with a time of 2:07:15, which was also the best marathon performance in 1994. That course record stood for 12 years until it was broken by one second when Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, a fellow Kenyan, won the 2006 race. Joseph Keino (born 1963) is a retired Kenyan long-distance runner. He represented his country at the inaugural 1992 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships, where he came fifth and won the team gold medal with Kenya. In 1991 he ran his half marathon career best of 1:00.33 hours in Grevenmacher, taking second place at the race. He won the 1991 Dam tot Damloop 10-miler and his time of 46:05 minutes for the distance was the fastest by any athlete in the world that year. In the same year as his IAAF World Half Marathon medal performance, he won the Egmond Half Marathon (two seconds off Marti ten Kate's course record) and the Route du Vin Half Marathon.
