1992 European Athletics U23 Cup
The 1st European Athletics U23 Cup was held on 18–19 July 1992. The participating teams were classified in two divisions, A and B. The competition was restricted to athletes that did not complete their 23rd birthday in 1992, i.e. born in 1970 or later (including junior athletes). This rule was interpreted differently by Bulgaria and Greece, sending also athletes born in 1969. Division A The contest for division A took place in Gateshead, United Kingdom. Gateshead
Gateshead () is a large town in northern England. It is on the River Tyne's southern bank, opposite Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle to which it is joined by seven bridges. Jonathan Michael Brown (born 27 February 1971) is a former British long-distance runner who specialised in 10,000 metres, cross country running and the marathon. Athletics career Born in Bridgend, Wales, he was affiliated with the City of Sheffield Athletic Club in England during his career. He gained Canadian citizenship in 2005, after living in there since 1996; but continued to make himself available for Britain until switching sporting allegiance at the start of 2008. Earlier in his running career he competed for the Iowa State Cyclones Track and Field and Iowa State Cyclones Cross Country teams. He was a bronze medallist in the 5000 m at the 1992 European Athletics U23 Cup. Carsten Eich (born 9 January 1970) is a retired (East) German runner who specialized in the 10,000 metres and the marathons. He is an eight-time German champion and national record holder in the half marathon. The 5000 metres or 5000-metre run is a common long-distance running event in track and field, approximately equivalent to or . It is one of the track events in the Olympic Games and the World Championships in Athletics, run over laps of a standard track. The same distance in road running is called a 5K run; referring to the distance in metres rather than kilometres serves to disambiguate the two events. The 5000 m has been present on the Olympic programme since 1912 for men and since 1996 for women. Prior to 1996, women had competed in an Olympic 3000 metres race since 1984. 1500 Metres
The 1500 metres or 1,500-metre run (typically pronounced 'fifteen-hundred metres') is the foremost middle distance track event in athletics. The distance has been contested at the Summer Olympics since 1896 and the World Championships in Athletics since 1983. It is equivalent to 1.5 kilometers or approximately miles. The event is closely associated with its slightly longer cousin, the mile race, from which it derives its nickname "the metric mile". The demands of the race are similar to that of the 800 metres, but with a slightly higher emphasis on aerobic endurance and a slightly lower sprint speed requirement. The 1500 metre race is predominantly aerobic, but anaerobic conditioning is also required.
