The 1991 New Mexico Lobos football team was an American football team that represented the University of New Mexico in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) during the 1991 NCAA Division I-A football season. In their fifth and final season under head coach Mike Sheppard, the Lobos compiled a 3–9 record (2–6 against WAC opponents) and were outscored by a total of 473 to 240. The team's statistical leaders included Stoney Case with 1,564 passing yards, Marc Wilson with 245 rushing yards, Carl Winston with 1,177 receiving yards, and kicker David Margolis with 50 points scored. Mike Sheppard (American Football)
Mike Sheppard (born October 29, 1951) is an American football coach and former player. Sheppard was an assistant at Idaho State when it won the NCAA Division I-AA title in 1981. He was a wide receiver for the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen when they won the 1971 NAIA Division II Football National Championship. In the national championship game, Sheppard was named the defensive player of the game. In 1983 as offensive coordinator at Kansas, he helped guide quarterback Frank Seurer to 2,789 yards and 14 touchdowns. Running backs Kerwin Bell, E. J. Jones, and Robert Mimbs combined to run for 1,295 yards and 9 TD. WR Bob Johnson had 58 catches for 1,154 yards and 7 TD. Western Athletic Conference
The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) is an NCAA Division I conference. The WAC covers a broad expanse of the western United States with member institutions located in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Utah, Washington (state), Washington, and Texas. Due to most of the conference's College football, football-playing members leaving the WAC for other affiliations, the conference discontinued football as a sponsored sport after the 2012–13 season and left the NCAA's NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-A). 1991 NCAA Division I-A Football Season
The 1991 NCAA Division I-A football season was the main college football season sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The season began on August 28, 1991, and ended on January 1, 1992. For the second consecutive season, there was a split national championship. Both the Miami Hurricanes and the Washington Huskies finished the season undefeated (12–0) and with the top ranking in a nationally recognized poll. Under the conference-bowl selection alignments of the time, the Hurricanes and Huskies could not meet in a decisive title game because Washington was slotted into the Rose Bowl as the Pac-10 champions, and the other spot in the Rose Bowl was automatically given to the Big Ten champions (in 1991, that was Michigan).
