1991 Dublin County Council Election In Fingal
An election to the electoral county of Fingal within Dublin County to Dublin County Council took place on 27 June 1991 as part of that year's Irish local elections. 24 councillors were elected from 6 local electoral areas on the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote for a five-year term of office. It was one of three electoral counties within Dublin County at this election, the others being Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown and South Dublin. The electoral county had been established in 1985 as Dublin–Fingal and was renamed Fingal for these local elections. From 1 January 1994, on the coming into effect of the Local Government (Dublin) Act 1993, County Dublin was disestablished as an administrative county, and in its place the electoral counties became three new counties. Dublin County Council
Dublin County Council ( ga, Comhairle Contae Bhaile Átha Cliath) was a local authority for the administrative county of County Dublin in Ireland. History The county council was established by the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898. Its headquarters were established at 10–11 Parnell Square in 1900 but, due to the cramped conditions, it transferred to 46–49 O'Connell Street, Dublin City in 1975. In 1985, Dublin County was divided into three electoral counties: Dublin–Belgard (South Dublin from 1991) to the southwest, Dublin–Fingal (Fingal from 1991) to the north, and Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown to the southeast. At the 1985 local election and the 1991 local election, the election was held within these electoral counties. Sheila Terry (politician)
Sheila Terry (born 7 June 1950) is an Irish Fine Gael Party politician who served as a member of the 22nd Seanad Éireann. As a member of the Progressive Democrats (PDs), Terry was elected at the 1991 local elections as a PD member of Fingal County Council for the Castleknock electoral area. She stood as a PD candidate in the Dublin West constituency at the 1992 general election and at the by-election in 1996. She left the Progressive Democrats before the 1999 local elections, when she was re-elected to the council as an independent, and joined Fine Gael in about 2000. She then stood as a Fine Gael for Dáil Éireann in the Dublin West constituency at the 2002 general election, but did not win a seat. Joan Burton (born 1 February 1949) is a former Irish Labour Party politician who served as Tánaiste and Leader of the Labour Party from 2014 to 2016, Minister for Social Protection from 2011 to 2016, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party from 2007 to 2014, Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 1997 and Minister of State at the Department of Social Welfare from 1993 to 1994. Marian McGennis
Marian McGennis (born November 1953) is an Irish former Fianna Fáil politician. A former civil servant, McGennis unsuccessfully contested the Dublin North constituency at the 1992 general election, and was then nominated to the 20th Seanad by Taoiseach Albert Reynolds, where she served from 1993 to 1997. She first elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin Central constituency at the 1997 general election. The constituency boundaries were changed before the 2002 general election and she instead contested the Dublin South-Central constituency which had gained an extra seat. However, she was not re-elected. McGennnis was a member of Dublin County Council from 1985 to 1991, and of Fingal County Council from 1993 to 1998. Joe Higgins (politician)
Joe Higgins (born 20 May 1949) is an Irish former Socialist Party politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin West constituency from 1997 to 2007 and from 2011 to 2016. He served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Dublin constituency from 2009 to 2011. Early life One of nine children of a small farming family, Higgins was born in 1949 in Lispole, part of the Dingle Gaeltacht in County Kerry. He went to school in the Dingle Christian Brothers School, and after finishing he enrolled in the priesthood. As part of his training he was sent to a Catholic seminary school in Minnesota, United States in the 1960s. Michael Kennedy (born 1 February 1949) is a former Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He served as a member of Fingal County Council from 1991 to 2007, and was Mayor from 2002 to 2003. Nora Owen (; born 1 June 1945) is an Irish former Fine Gael politician who served as Minister for Justice from 1994 to 1997 and Deputy Leader of Fine Gael from 1993 to 2001. Bernie Malone
Bernie Malone (born 26 March 1948) is a former Irish Labour Party politician. She was elected to Fingal County Council in 1979 for the Malahide area. She was elected to the European Parliament for the Dublin constituency at the 1994 European election. Malone was selected as the only Labour Party candidate at the party convention, however the party leader Dick Spring had Orla Guerin added to the ticket which caused some friction between the candidates; Guerin polled well but was not elected. Michael Joe Cosgrave (9 March 1938 – 9 January 2022) was an Irish Fine Gael politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) from 1977 to 1992 and 1997 to 2002. Cosgrave was born on 9 March 1938. He was educated at St. Joseph's Secondary CBS in Fairview, at the School of Management Studies in Rathmines, and at University College Dublin. Paul Nicholas Gogarty (born 20 December 1968) is an Irish Independent politician who has served as a South Dublin County Councillor for Lucan since May 2014. Thomas Morrissey (born July 1956) is a former Irish politician and member of Seanad Éireann and businessman. He was nominated by the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern to the 22nd Seanad in 2002 as a member of the now defunct Progressive Democrats. He was subsequently appointed to the Progressive Democrats Front Bench as Transportation spokesperson in September 2002.
