1990 Missouri Valley Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1990 Missouri Valley Conference men's basketball tournament was played after the conclusion of the 1989–1990 regular season at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. The Illinois State Redbirds defeated the in the championship game, 81-78, and as a result won their 2nd MVC Tournament title and earned an automatic bid to the 1990 NCAA tournament. It was also the final MVC tournament played on a campus site, before moving the entire event to St. Louis the following season. Redbird Arena
CEFCU Arena, formerly known as Redbird Arena, is a 10,200-seat multi-purpose arena located in Normal, Illinois, on the campus of Illinois State University. Built in 1989, the building is notable for its use of a Teflon-coated roof that gives off a "glow" during night events. 1989–90 Illinois State Redbirds Men's Basketball Team
The 1989–90 Illinois State Redbirds men's basketball team represented Illinois State University during the 1989–90 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Redbirds, led by first year head coach Bob Bender, played their first full season of home games at Redbird Arena and were members of the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds finished the season 18–13, 9–5 in conference play to finish in a three-way tie for second place. They were the number two seed for the Missouri Valley Conference tournament by virtue of holding tie-breakers over Creighton University and Tulsa University. They defeated Drake University in the quarterfinal round, Creighton University in the semifinal round, and Southern Illinois University in the final round to win the championship (their second in the conference). Bob Bender
Robert Michael Bender (born April 28, 1957) is an American professional basketball coach, who last served an assistant coach with the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association. Born in Quantico, Virginia, He attended Bloomington High School in Bloomington, Illinois, where he was an All-American in basketball. Bender has the distinction of being the only individual to play on two teams in two NCAA Championship games. He was a freshman on Bob Knight's undefeated 1976 Indiana team and played point guard at Duke from 1977 to 1980, including an appearance in the title game against Kentucky. Bender was drafted by the San Diego Clippers in the sixth round before his senior year, but did not play. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Duke under Mike Krzyzewski. Missouri Valley Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The State Farm Missouri Valley Conference men's basketball tournament, commonly called Arch Madness, is an annual basketball tournament which features the men's basketball teams of each of the Missouri Valley Conference member universities. The tournament, held in St. Louis since 1991, determines which MVC team receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. Arch Madness celebrated its 30th Anniversary in 2020. As of 2021, the tournament is the second longest running tournament (to the Big East men's basketball tournament) to be continuously held in one city. Although technically the BIG EAST did not conclude their 2020 tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Valley has indicated it will not attempt to claim the longest running title due to the circumstances surrounding the pandemic.
