The 1990 John Hancock Bowl was a college football postseason bowl game between the Michigan State Spartans and the USC Trojans. It was the 57th edition of the Sun Bowl played at Sun Bowl (stadium) in El Paso, TX. Background The Spartans were co-champions (with Iowa, Michigan & Illinois) of the Big Ten Conference for the second time in four seasons, with this being their fourth straight bowl appearance. Larry Smith (American Football Coach)
Larry Dean Smith (September 12, 1939 – January 28, 2008) was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Tulane University (1976–1979), the University of Arizona (1980–1986), the University of Southern California (1987–1992), and the University of Missouri (1994–2000). In Smith's 24 seasons as a head coach, his teams were 143–126–7. Early life Smith was a native of Van Wert, Ohio, where he was a three-sport star at Van Wert High School, graduating in 1957. He earned an appointment to West Point, but transferred to Bowling Green State University a year later to pursue coaching. He played two-way end for the Falcons, playing on a small-college national championship team as a sophomore in 1959; he won all-league honors as a junior and was team captain as a senior. Todd Marinovich
Todd Marvin Marinovich (born Marvin Scott Marinovich on July 4, 1969) is a former American and Canadian football quarterback. He played in the National Football League (Los Angeles Raiders), Canadian Football League (Winnipeg Blue Bombers, BC Lions), and Arena Football League (Los Angeles Avengers). Marinovich is known for the well-documented, intense focus of his training as a young athlete and for his brief career upon reaching the professional leagues that was cut short primarily because of his addiction to drugs. Sun Bowl
The Sun Bowl is a college football bowl game that has been played since 1935 in the southwestern United States at El Paso, Texas. Along with the Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl, it is the second-oldest bowl game in the country, behind the Rose Bowl. Usually held near the end of December, games are played at the Sun Bowl stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at El Paso. Since 2011, it has featured teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the Pac-12 Conference. The 1998 Norwest Sun Bowl was played by the TCU Horned Frogs and the USC Trojans. This was the 65th Sun Bowl held and the last sponsored by Norwest Corporation due to next year's game being held by Wells Fargo. Background Paul Hackett was in his first year (of three) with USC, having led them to a bowl game for the first time since the 1996 Rose Bowl. This would be Hackett's only bowl game with USC. 1996 Sun Bowl
The 1996 Norwest Sun Bowl, played on December 31, 1996, featured the Stanford Cardinal and the Michigan State Spartans. Stanford scored first following a lateral from running back Josh Madsen to Leroy Pruitt. The 78 yard play went for a touchdown, and set the day for a Stanford rout. In the second quarter, quarterback Chad Hutchinson threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to fullback Jon Ritchie for a 14–0 lead. Adam Salina scored on a 1-yard touchdown run before halftime to increase Stanford's lead to 21–0. Kevin Miller added a 24-yard field goal in the third to give Stanford a 24–0 lead. Damon Dunn later scored on a 1-yard run moving the lead to 31–0. Stanford's final points came on a 6-yard return of a blocked punt for a touchdown, making the final score 38–0. The 2000 Citrus Bowl was a college football bowl game following the 1999–2000 football season. The game matched the Michigan State Spartans against the Florida Gators. The 1992 Freedom Bowl was a postseason college football bowl game between the USC Trojans of the Pacific-10 Conference and the Fresno State Bulldogs of the Western Athletic Conference. Courtney Tyrone Hawkins, Jr. (born December 12, 1969) is a former American football player and coach who is currently the wide receivers coach at Michigan State. He was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second round of the 1992 NFL Draft.
