1990 Fremantle State By-election
The 1990 Fremantle state by-election was a by-election held on 26 May 1990 for the Western Australian Legislative Assembly seat of Fremantle. The election occurred on the same day as the 1990 Maylands state by-election. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Labor member and former Deputy Premier David Parker on 26 April 1990. The seat of Fremantle, first established in 1890, was considered to be a safe seat for the Labor Party. Timeline Candidates The by-election attracted eleven candidates. Of these, four were notable—Jim McGinty, the Labor candidate, was the secretary of the Miscellaneous Workers' Union. Arthur Marshall, the Liberal candidate, was a veteran sports commentator for the Seven Network who had also founded a tennis academy. Arthur Marshall (Australian Politician)
Arthur Dix Marshall (5 August 1934 – 7 June 2018) was an Australian politician and sportsman from Western Australia. Biography Marshall was born in East Fremantle in 1934 to Horrie and Eunice Marshall. He was educated at Palmyra Primary School, Fremantle Boys High School, and Wesley College, Perth, where he was a house captain and prefect. He had three children with his wife Helen, including Dixie Marshall, a local television newsreader. Marshall died from bone cancer on 7 June 2018. Sporting career Marshall played Australian rules football for East Fremantle Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL). Between 1954 and 1961 played 20 league for East Fremantle. In 1955 and 1956 he entered the Wimbledon Championships, losing in the first and third rounds respectively. Peter Tagliaferri
Peter Tagliaferri (born 2 November 1960) is an Australian politician. He is a former mayor of the City of Fremantle, a position he held for eight and a half years. Background Tagliaferri's grandfather migrated to Australia in 1932 and, after working in the mines for seven years, his father Osvaldo also migrated. Osvaldo died of leukemia in 1983 when Tagliaferri was a 23-year-old, leaving him with the responsibility of family, mortgage and the family business (Interfoods). He was born in East Fremantle, and educated at Lady of Fatima in Palmyra, St Brendan's in Beaconsfield and in 1977 graduated from Christian Brothers College, Fremantle. His background is retailing, manufacturing and farming in York. Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. John Troy (Australian Politician)
John Robert Troy (born 23 September 1941) was an Australian politician, and a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1977 until 1980 representing the seat of Fremantle. Biography Dr Troy was born in Beaconsfield, an inner suburb of Fremantle, Western Australia, to Paddy Troy, a seaman, union secretary and state leader of the Communist Party of Australia, and Mabel (née Neilson). He was educated at East Fremantle Primary School and at Fremantle Boys' School before commencing his studies at the University of Western Australia. Initially an engineering student, he undertook casual work on the docks between 1959 and 1961 before becoming a trainee engineman on the railways and ultimately a qualified fireman, and was involved in the Locomotive Engine Drivers' and Firemen's Union, and also with the Seamen's Union. For a time in the 1960s, he was also a member of the Communist Party and the Eureka Youth League, and played hockey with the North Fremantle Hockey Club. ... Greens Western Australia, commonly known as the Greens WA, is a List of member parties of the Australian Greens, member party of the Australian Greens in Western Australia. The Greens (WA) was formed following the merger of the Western Australian Green Party with the Green Earth Alliance composed of the Vallentine Peace Group and Alternative Coalition in 1990. Christabel Chamarette
Christabel Marguerite Alain Chamarette, sometimes Christabel Bridge (born 1 May 1948) was a Greens Senator for Western Australia from 1992 to 1996. Personal life Born in Hyderabad, India in 1948, Chamarette is of Anglo-Indian and French Huguenot ancestry. She has worked as a community worker in Bangladesh and later as a clinical psychologist at Fremantle Prison. Politics Chamarette was appointed to the Senate in 1992, following the resignation of Jo Vallentine. She was opposed to privatising Telstra and delayed the Mabo legislation by demanding the inclusion of mineral rights in the compensation package for native title holders. She was defeated at the 1996 general election; her term ending several months later on 30 June 1996. Miscellaneous Workers' Union
The Federated Miscellaneous Workers' Union (F.M.W.U.), commonly known as the 'Missos', was an Australian trade union which existed between 1915 and 1992. It represented an extremely diverse and disparate range of occupations, but its core support came from workers employed in cleaning and security services. Formation The union was first established on 6 May 1910 as the Watchmen, Caretakers and Cleaners Union of New South Wales (W.C.C.U.), which was created by the Organising Committee of the New South Wales Labor Council.
