1990 European Athletics Championships
The 15th European Athletics Championships were held from 26 August to 2 September 1990 in Split, Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia. The host stadium was Stadion Poljud. It was the last participation of East Germany (which was already scheduled to be merged with the Federal Republic), the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, and SFR Yugoslavia. Are Nakkim (born 13 February 1964) is a retired Norwegian long-distance runner who specialized in the 10,000 metres. He represented Moss IL during his active career. Are Nakkim attended Boston University, where he ran cross country and track. He won a silver medal in 10,000 m at the 1990 European Championships. He also competed in 3000 metres steeplechase at the 1986 European Championships as well as the World Cross Country Championships in 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992 without any success. In 10,000 m he became Norwegian champion only once, in 1984. He did win the 3000 m chase in 1985–1986 and 5000 m in 1986 and 1988–1990. Sławomir Majusiak
Sławomir Majusiak (30 May 1964 – 5 December 2021) was a Polish long-distance runner who competed mainly in track running. His greatest achievement was a 5000 metres bronze medal at the 1990 European Athletics Championships. He also represented Poland at the 1989 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and 1991 World Championships in Athletics. Majusiak was born in Jarocin, Polish People's Republic, Poland. As a young athlete he was a 3000 metres bronze medallist at the 1983 European Athletics Junior Championships, becoming the first Pole to reach the podium in that event. He won the 5000 m at the 1991 European Cup (athletics), European Cup B Final. Gary Martin Staines (born 3 July 1963 in Welwyn Garden City) is a male United Kingdom, British former long-distance runner. Athletics career Staines competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics. He was the silver medallist in the 5000 metres at the 1990 European Athletics Championships. He was also a team silver medallist with Tim Hutchings at the 1989 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. He represented England at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, England in the 10,000 metres event, at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand. Salvatore Antibo (born 7 February 1962) is a former long-distance runner from Italy. He won nine medals at the International athletics competitions. but curiously, he never won national championship (not outdoor, not indoor). Biography Antibo was born on 7 February 1962 in Altofonte, within the province of Palermo (Sicily). He revealed as a consistent middle-distance runner in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, when he arrived fourth in the 10,000 m final. His national popularity was however overshadowed by his compatriot Alberto Cova, who won the gold medal. After a bronze medal at the 1986 European Championships, behind Stefano Mei and again Cova, he gained the status of Italian number one, winning the silver medal over 10,000 m at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Gennaro Di Napoli (born 5 March 1968) is an Italian former middle distance runner. He won 13 medals at the International athletics competitions, 10 of these at senior level. Biography Di Napoli was born in Naples but moved early in his life to Lombardy, in northern Italy. He excelled in the distances from 800 to 3,000 meters. He won the silver medal at the European Championships in Split 1990 over 1500 metres. He missed out on a medal at the World Championships 1991. In 1992 Di Napoli scored a sensational victory over the world champion Noureddine Morceli from Algeria at the Golden Gala meeting in Rome. However, he got injured two weeks before the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992, where he participated, but failed to reach the final. Jens-Peter Herold (born 2 June 1965 in Neuruppin) is a retired German middle-distance runner who participated in several international championships in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In the 1987 World Championships he came sixth over 1500 metres. The following year he won a bronze medal (finishing behind Peter Rono and Peter Elliott) at the Seoul Olympics and also ran a new German record for the mile run in 3:49.22 min. which is still unbroken (as of 2019). In 1990 he won the European Championships double finishing first both indoor and outdoor over 1500 m. Herold was renowned for his finishing kick which secured him victories over potentially stronger competitors. However, in 1991 he lost an almost certain bronze medal at the World Championships in Tokyo on the finishing line.
