1990 Costa Rican General Election
General elections were held in Costa Rica on 4 February 1990.Dieter Nohlen (2005) ''Elections in the Americas: A data handbook, Volume I'', p155 Rafael Ángel Calderón Fournier of the Social Christian Unity Party (PUSC) won the presidential election, whilst his party also won the parliamentary election. Voter turnout was 81.8%. Unlike previous elections, Calderon's nomination was not undisputed. Despite expressing that he would not run again for President after the results of the previous race, he was eventually convinced by his followers. Yet, young former minister and business man Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Echeverría from the liberal faction inside PUSC choose to face Calderón at the primaries. Former deputy José Hine from PUSC's left wing also run with testimonial results. Rafael Ángel Calderón Fournier
Rafael Ángel Calderón Fournier (born 14 March 1949) was President of Costa Rica from 1990 to 1994. He was the presidential candidate of the Social Christian Unity Party for the national elections held in February 2010, but resigned his candidacy on 5 October 2009, when he was sentenced to five years in prison for two counts of corruption. Family life Rafael Ángel Calderón Fournier was born in Diriamba, Nicaragua, on 14 March 1949. His father was Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia, who served as president from 1940 to 1944. His mother was Maria del Rosario Fournier Mora. He was born while his parents were in exile. Calderon Fournier is married to Gloria Bejarano Almada, the daughter of Mexican physician and politician, Armando León Bejarano. Isaac Felipe Azofeifa (11 April 1909 – 3 April 1997) was a Costa Rican poet, politician and educator. Azofeifa is considered one of the most important Costa Rican poets of the twentieth century. Biography He was born in Santo Domingo de Heredia, Costa Rica in 1909. In 1929 he entered the Instituto Pedagógico de Santiago de Chile (Pedagogical Institute of Santiago), where he became Professor of State in Castilian. National Union Party (Costa Rica)
The National Union Party ( es, Partido Unión Nacional) is the name of several parties in Costa Rica, generally located on the centre-right of the political spectrum. The first party using that name was led by Ascensión Esquivel Ibarra as leader and candidate for the 1901 and 1913 elections. Ibarra was liberal as most of the Costa Rican political elite at the time. The party also took part in the 1915 parliamentary election. Carlos Durán Cartín was also candidate for the party in latter elections. Liberal journalist Otilio Ulate Blanco took control of the party and was part of an oppositional alliance of parties against Republican candidate Rafael Angel Calderón Guardia in 1948 allegedly winning the election. Agrarian Labour Action Party
The Agricultural Labour Action Party ( es, Partido Acción Laborista Agrícola) is a political party in Costa Rica. The party was founded after the end of the Agrarian Politics Union Party. The first general elections contested by the party were in 1990, in which it received only 0.4% of the vote, and failed to win a seat. In 1994 its vote share dropped to 0.3%, again failing to win a seat. In 1998 its electoral performance improved, as it received 1.2% of the national vote and winning its first seat. The Cartago Agrarian Union Party ( es, Partido Unión Agrícola Cartaginés) is a political party in Cartago Province, Costa Rica. The party was founded in 1969 by Juan Guillermo Brenes Castillo. It first contested a general election in 1970, but received only 0.5% of the vote and failed to win a seat.
