1990 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix
The 1990 Australian motorcycle Grand Prix was the last round of the 1990 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. It took place on the weekend of 14–16 September 1990 at Phillip Island. 500 cc race report Cagiva sat out the last race, as the grid was headed by Mick Doohan, Kevin Schwantz, Wayne Gardner and Eddie Lawson. The start went to the Rothmans Hondas, but by the hairpin Wayne Rainey was up to third. Exiting the hairpin, Gardner almost highsided, letting Rainey through. Rainey took the lead from Doohan, with Gardner making it a trio away at the front. Rainey was passed by Doohan on the straight, but he re-took the lead by barging through the inside of the hairpin. Doohan passed on the straight again: the Yamaha was never beaten on straight-line speed. The trio became a quartet as Schwantz caught up, having set the fastest lap of the race. Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit
The Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit is a motor racing circuit located near Ventnor, on Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia. The current circuit was first used in 1956. History Road circuit Motor racing on Phillip Island began in 1928 with the running of the 100 Miles Road Race, an event which has since become known as the first Australian Grand Prix. It utilised a high speed rectangle of local closed-off public roads with four similar right hand corners. The course length varied, with the car course approximately per lap, compared to the motorcycle circuit which was approximately in length. Niall Mackenzie
Niall Macfarlane Mackenzie (born 19 July 1961) is a Scottish former professional motorcycle road racer. Career Mackenzie, who hails from Fankerton, near Denny, Stirlingshire; won the British Superbike Championship three times from 1996 to 1998 with the Rob McElnea-run Yamaha team, and the British 250cc and 350cc titles twice earlier in his career. He had a long career in the Grand Prix motorcycle racing circuit, debuting in 1984 in the 250cc class. He moved up to the 500cc class in 1986 on a Suzuki before spells on Honda and Yamaha motorcycles. He was 4th in the championship in 1990, and finished in the top 10 in the championship on five other occasions. His final racing season was the 2000 British Superbike series, although he did a farewell one-off at Knockhill in 2001 and stood in for the injured Yukio Kagayama at Donington Park in 2003. Christian Sarron (born 27 March 1955 in Clermont-Ferrand, France) is a French former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. __TOC__ Motorcycle racing career He began his career on a Kawasaki when he met French Grand Prix racer Patrick Pons. Pons helped him get his start in the international racing circuit. His first victory came in the rain in the 1977 German Grand Prix. He was injured in a 750cc race which would begin a trend of numerous injuries for the next few years. In 1982, he again won in the rain at the Finnish Grand Prix, cementing his reputation as an exceptional wet weather rider. He finished the 1982 season 8th in the 350 class and 10th in the 250 class. Tadahiko Taira (born November 12, 1956) is a Japanese former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. Born in Minamisōma, he won three consecutive All Japan 500cc championships in 1983, 1984 and 1985. Taira began his Grand Prix career in 1984 with Yamaha. He enjoyed his best season in 1987 when he finished the season in sixth place overall in the 500cc world championship. Jean-Philippe Ruggia (born October 1, 1965 in Toulon) is a former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer from France. His best year was in 1995 when he finished in fifth place in the 250cc world championship. He won two races in 1993 riding for Aprilia and ended the season ranked sixth. He was also moderately successful in the 500cc class, finishing 8th overall in 1990. He is also the first rider known to use the elbow down riding style, years before Marc Márquez popularized the riding style in Grand Prix racing. Cees Doorakkers
Cornelis Martinus Anthinius Maria Doorakkers (born 2 March 1963 in Gilze, Netherlands) is a former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. Cees Doorakker was the 250cc Dutch champion in 1984 and 1986. In 1986 he also reached the championship in the 500cc class. Doorakkers raced in the Grand Prix road race world championship between 1984 and 1995. Being a privateer without factory supported machines, he scored only a few points, his best result being a seventh place at the Yugoslavian Grand Prix in Rijeka in 1990. That season he reached a total of 39 points, 16th in the final ranking. In 1991 he finished the season ranked as the top privateer, ranking 14th overall (40 points). Later years were plagued by lack of money, inferior equipment and bad luck, like the jamming of his new engine in the first race of the season in Australia. Eddie Laycock (born 25 May 1961) is a former professional motorcycle racer from Dublin, Ireland. Motorcycle racing career A two-time Isle of Man TT race winner, in 1986, Laycock finished runner-up to Brian Reid in the TT Formula 2 World Championship. In 1987 he beat Reid to win thJunior TT 250ccrace, and in 1989 won thSupersport 400ccRace. He also competed in the 500cc World Championship on Millar Racing machines from 1988 to 1992, with a best race result of 9th at the Dutch TT in 1992, and a best championship ranking of 12th in 1991. Marco Papa (16 March 1958 in Perugia, Umbria, Italy, – 9 September 1999 near Adro Italy) was a Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. His most successful year was in 1990 when he finished in 13th place in the 500cc world championship aboard a Moto Club Perugia sponsored Honda NS500. Pierfrancesco 'Frankie' Chili, (born 20 June 1964 in Bologna, Italy) is a former motorcycle racer who competed in the Superbike World Championship and the 250 cc and 500 cc classes in Grand Prix. In September 2020 he confirmed he was suffering from Parkinson's disease. In World Superbike he had a record number of starts, as well as 10 poles and 17 wins. He retired at the end of the season.
