1990 AFL Finals Series
The 1990 finals series was the first finals series to be played under the newly renamed Australian Football League. The series was scheduled to occur over four weekends in September 1990, culminating with the 94th AFL/VFL Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 29 September 1990. However, after Collingwood and West Coast drew in the Qualifying Final, the series was extended to five weeks, ending on 6 October. Collingwood would eventually go on to win the 1990 Premiership, breaking a famous 32-year drought marked by numerous Grand Final losses. The finals system This was the 18th and final season in which the McIntyre Final Five System would be used. AFL Finals Series
The Australian Football League finals series, more generally known as the AFL finals, and known from 1897 until 1989 as the Victorian Football League finals series or VFL finals, is a playoff tournament held at the end of each AFL season to determine the premier. The top eight teams qualify for the finals based on the home-and-away season results, and finals matches are played over four weeks under the conventions of the AFL final eight system, culminating in the AFL Grand Final. The finals series is traditionally held throughout September. The playing of a finals series at the end of the season dates back to the establishment of the Victorian Football League in 1897. Karl Langdon
Karl John Langdon (born 28 March 1968) is a sports commentator and radio personality in Western Australia and a former Australian rules footballer with the Subiaco Football Club and the West Coast Eagles. Early life Langdon began his sport career at Guildford Grammar School, an Anglican boys' school in Perth, Western Australia. During his school years he was an outstanding sportsman, captaining the school's football, cricket and athletics teams, the first student in its history to do so. Doug Barwick
Doug Barwick (born 6 February 1962) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented Fitzroy and Collingwood in the Australian Football League. Recruited from East Launceston, Barwick made his debut in Round 1 of the 1984 VFL season against Geelong at Kardinia Park. A strong mark and a long kick for his size, Barwick was a tough half-forward who was a handy goalkicker. He played 76 games for Fitzroy before moving to Collingwood in 1988. Gavin Brown (footballer)
Gavin Brown (born 25 September 1967) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the 1980s and 1990s. Since retiring as a player he has been an assistant coach with Collingwood, Carlton and joined North Melbourne at the end of the 2013 season. He is currently serving as a development coach at North Melbourne. Brown was a hardworking and versatile player for the Magpies throughout his career. He was also able to play as a key forward and / or a defender. A former Marcellin College student, he was part of their 1st XVIII to win both the 1984 Associated Grammar Schools premiership as well as the coveted Herald Shield Cup which was captained by Carlton champion Stephen Silvagni. Bryan Sheehan
Bryan Sheehan (born 25 August 1985) is an Irish Gaelic footballer with the St Mary's club in Cahirciveen, South Kerry divisional side and, formerly, the Kerry county team. He won five All-Ireland SFC medals (2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2014). Career Club At club level Sheehan lined out with both St Mary's Cahersiveen and South Kerry. Enjoying much success with both. Stephen Tingay
Stephen Tingay (born 13 August 1970) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the 1990s. Recruited from Shepparton, Tingay was an energetic and hard working midfielder known for his blonde locks. The 1994 season was Tingay's best, being named as an All-Australian and finishing second in the Demons' best and fairest. Tingay played the first nine games of the 1999 season before severe hip and buttock injuries sidelined him for the rest of the year and all of the following 2000 season. Sydney selected Tingay in the pre-season draft for the 2001 season; however, Tingay's continued injuries forced him into retirement by the end of 2001 and he never played a senior game for Sydney. Earl Spalding
Earl George Spalding (born 11 March 1965 in South Perth) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne and Carlton in the Victorian Football League/Australian Football League (VFL/AFL), as well as for Perth and East Fremantle in the West Australian Football League. He is known as "the Duke" or "Snake" because of his unusual running style, and also the "golf ball" in reference to his surname. Spalding grew up in Perth, Western Australia, where he attended Wesley College. His father, George Spalding, was a well-known West Australian National Football League (WANFL) player with the Perth Football Club. After leaving school, Spalding played for 63 games for Perth between 1983 and 1986, reaching the preliminary final in 1986. Greg Healy
Greg Healy (born 16 September 1965) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the VFL/AFL. His brother Gerard was a Brownlow Medallist. "Sugar" Healy's rise to the senior ranks at Melbourne were helped when he won the 1983 Morrish Medal for the season's best player in the VFL's Under-19 competition. A rover, he made his debut for the Demons the following season and in 1986 won their best and fairest award and topped their goalkicking. In 1988 he was appointed Melbourne's youngest ever captain at just 22 years of age. In his first year in charge he led the club to their first Grand Final since 1964, but they were defeated by Hawthorn. Healy gave up the captaincy to Garry Lyon at the end of 1990. Simon Eishold
Simon Eishold (born 26 March 1967) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne and Richmond in the Victorian/Australian Football League (VFL/AFL). Eishold, a centreman, came from Ormond Amateurs and is perhaps best remembered for a missed shot at goal late in the last quarter of the 1987 Preliminary Final after marking in the goal square against Hawthorn's Peter Schwab. A goal would likely have booked Melbourne's spot in the Grand Final and Eishold, who came in from an angle, pull his kick wide. Hawthorn would go on to win the match with a goal after the siren, following Jim Stynes giving away a 15-metre penalty. Tony Campbell
Anthony Campbell (born May 7, 1962) is an American former professional National Basketball Association (NBA) player. Campbell played prep basketball at Teaneck High School in Teaneck, New Jersey, graduating in 1980. A 6'7" small forward out of Ohio State University, Campbell was selected 20th overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 1984 NBA draft. He was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1987. Campbell became the first player to earn an NBA ring ( 1987–88 Lakers) and CBA ring (Albany Patroons) in the same season. Campbell struggled for playing time during his stint in Los Angeles. In 1989 he was signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Minnesota Timberwolves, for whom he averaged 23.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in their inaugural season. Graeme Yeats
Graeme Yeats (born 21 September 1964) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne Football Club, Melbourne in the Australian Football League, VFL/AFL. A skilful and consistent defender/wingman, Yeats played 182 games with Melbourne, including 13 finals and the 1988 VFL Grand Final. He later played VFA/VFL football for Springvale Football Club, Springvale. In the 1996 VFL Grand Final, his mark on the goal-line and subsequent goal from a tight angle with 47 seconds remaining was the winning goal in Springvale's 3-point premiership win against Frankston Football Club, Frankston. Ricky Jackson (Australian Footballer)
Ricky Jackson (born 19 June 1967) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League/Australian Football League (VFL/AFL). Jackson tried out initially at Richmond but the rover was not wanted by the club due to his size. Despite this rejection, he had a successful career with Melbourne where he became a handy goal scorer and topped their goal-kicking in 1988 with 43 goals. Most notably he kicked five goals in Melbourne's Preliminary Final win over Carlton that year, although he went goal-less from the forward pocket in their Grand Final loss.
