The 1989–90 NHL season, 1989–90 Minnesota North Stars season was the North Stars' Minnesota North Stars seasons, 23rd season (sports), season. Coached by Pierre Page, the team compiled a record of 36–40–4 for 76 points to finish the regular season 4th in the Norris Division. The North Stars were nearly unbeatable at the Met Center, winning 26, the best in the Norris Division and third-best home record overall. Doug Zmolek
Douglas Allan Zmolek (born November 3, 1970) is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman who played in the NHL for eight seasons between 1992 and 2000. Playing career Zmolek graduated from John Marshall High School in 1989. He was drafted seventh overall by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft held in Minnesota. Zmolek attended the University of Minnesota of the WCHA and was named to the WCHA Second All-Star Team and the NCAA Second All-American Team in his junior, and final, year in 1992. Zmolek made his debut in the NHL in the 1992–93 season with the San Jose Sharks after he was earlier acquired from the North Stars in the dispersal draft on May 30, 1991. In his second year, Zmolek was traded back to the Stars franchise which had relocated to Dallas. As a physical stay-at-home defenseman, Zmolek spent parts of two seasons with Dallas before stints with the Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks. Buffalo Sabres
The Buffalo Sabres are a professional ice hockey team based in Buffalo, New York. The Sabres compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference. 1989–90 Hartford Whalers Season
The 1988–90 Hartford Whalers season was the Whalers' eleventh season in the National Hockey League. Offseason On May 12, 1989, the Whalers announced that general manager Emile Francis would be promoted to team president. Replacing Francis as general manager of the club was Eddie Johnston. Johnston had previously held the general manager position with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1983 to 1988. During his tenure with the Penguins, the club drafted Mario Lemieux with the first overall selection in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. Four days later, on May 16, Johnston fired head coach Larry Pleau. Pleau led the Whalers to a 81-117-26 record over parts of five seasons as head coach of the club from 1980 to 1988. Pleau also had previously been the general manager of the club from 1981 to 1983. The Hartford Whalers were a professional ice hockey team based for most of its existence in Hartford, Connecticut. The club played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) from 1972 until 1979, and in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1979 to 1997. New York Islanders
The New York Islanders (colloquially known as the Isles) are a professional ice hockey team based in Elmont, New York. Helmuts Balderis
Helmuts Balderis-Sildedzis (born 31 July 1952) is a Soviet former ice hockey player. He played right wing, participated in the Soviet team's losing effort in the Miracle on Ice, and played part of a single season in the NHL after being drafted in 1989 by the Minnesota North Stars, becoming the oldest player to be drafted by an NHL team at the age of 36. Playing career Balderis played in the Soviet Hockey League for Dinamo Riga (1969–1977, 1980–1985) and CSKA Moscow (1977–80). He was the leading scorer in the 1977 and 1984 seasons, winning the Player of the Year award in 1977. He was the best Latvian S.S.R. player of the 1970s and 1980s and the most prolific scorer from that nation, tallying 333 goals in Soviet league play. Balderis played for the Soviet national team, on the losing side of the Miracle on Ice game in 1980 but winning the World Championships in 1978, 1979 and 1983. Thomas Stuart Pederson (born January 14, 1970) is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman who played five seasons in the National Hockey League between 1992–93 and 1996–97. Career Pederson was drafted 217th overall by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. He played 240 career NHL games with the San Jose Sharks and Toronto Maple Leafs, scoring 20 goals and 49 assists for 69 points.
