1989–90 Kansas Jayhawks Men's Basketball Team
The 1989–90 Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball team represented the University of Kansas in the 1989–90 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, which was the Jayhawks' 92nd basketball season. The head coach was Roy Williams, who served his 2nd year at KU. The team played its home games in Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas. The team set an NCAA record for largest unranked to ranked jump. Following the preseason NIT, where the Jayhawks defeated the 2nd, 1st, and 25th ranked teams in the nation, the Jayhawks jumped to the 4th ranked team in the nation. They remained in the top two for the remainder of the regular season. The season also marked the beginning of an NCAA-record 32 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances that as of the 2023 tournament (there was no tournament in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic) is still active. Roy Williams (coach)
Roy Allen Williams (born August 1, 1950) is an American retired college basketball coach who served as the men's head coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels for 18 seasons and the Kansas Jayhawks for 15 seasons. He was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007. Williams started his college coaching career at North Carolina as an assistant coach for Dean Smith in 1978. Four years later, North Carolina won the national championship. After ten years as Smith's assistant, Williams became head coach at Kansas in 1988, taking them to 14 consecutive NCAA tournaments, four Final Four appearances, two national championship game appearances, collecting an .805 winning percentage, and winning nine conference titles. Cimarron, Kansas
Cimarron is a city in and the county seat of Gray County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 1,981. History Cimarron was first settled in 1878. It took its name from a fork in the Chisholm Trail which led travelers to the Cimarron River. Between 1887 and 1893, a county seat war took place in Gray County that involved several notable Old West figures, such as Bat Masterson, Bill Tilghman, and Ben Daniels. As a result of the dispute, Cimarron became the permanent county seat of Gray County. In the wee hours of June 10, 1893, Bill Doolin and four members of his gang robbed a train one-half mile east of Cimarron. In 2016 the Southwest Chief owned by Amtrak derailed, and Amtrak and BNSF filed a lawsuit against one of the companies in Cimarron for damaging the rails by a road vehicle. East Chicago is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 29,698 at the 2010 census. Mark Christopher Randall (born September 30, 1967) is an American former professional basketball player who played in four National Basketball Association (NBA) seasons for the Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, and Denver Nuggets. Randall was selected by the Bulls in the first round (26th pick overall) of the 1991 NBA draft and averaged 2.6 points per game for his career. Randall attended Cherry Creek High School in Englewood, Colorado where he led the Bruins to the 1986 state title game. He played collegiately for the University of Kansas.
