The Dutch Eredivisie in the 1989–90 season was contested by 18 teams. Ajax won the championship. Eredivisie
The Eredivisie (; ''"Honour Division"'' or ''"Premier Division"'') is the highest level of professional football in the Netherlands. The league was founded in 1956, two years after the start of professional football in the Netherlands. It is considered one of the best European leagues. As of the 2020–21 season, it is ranked the sixth-best league in Europe by UEFA. The Eredivisie consists of 18 clubs. Each club meets every other club twice during the season, once at home and once away. At the end of each season, the two clubs at the bottom are relegated to the second level of the Dutch league system, the (First Division), while the champion and runner-up of the are automatically promoted to the Eredivisie. Fortuna Sittard
Fortuna Sittard (; li, Fortuna Zitterd ) is a football club in Sittard, Netherlands. The club currently plays its football in the 12,500 capacity Fortuna Sittard Stadion and features in the Eredivisie. The club was established through a merger of former clubs Fortuna 54 and Sittardia, which merged as the Fortuna Sittardia Combinatie on 1 July 1968. History The club experienced mixed fortunes throughout its history although they were a regular fixture in the Eredivisie in the 1990s, with players such as Kevin Hofland, Mark van Bommel and Fernando Ricksen emerging from its youth system. These players later joined PSV Eindhoven and Rangers, and featured for the Netherlands national team. The team also signed Wilfred Bouma and Patrick Paauwe from the youth setup of PSV. Franz Bernhard Wohlfahrt (; born 1 July 1964) is an Austrian former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Club career Born in Sankt Veit an der Glan, Carinthia, Wohlfahrt started his career at hometown outfit SV Sankt Veit. He turned professional at FK Austria Wien, where he would spend almost 20 years in two spells, winning six league titles and four domestic cups. In 1996, aged 32, he finally moved abroad, joining Germany's VfB Stuttgart, and being essential as the club reached the final of the 1997–98 Cup Winner's Cup, lost 1–0 to Chelsea FC. Subsequently, he returned to his first club, retiring a few years later with amateurs SC Untersiebenbrunn. 1990–91 European Cup
The 1990–91 European Cup was the 36th season of the European Cup, a tournament for men's football clubs in nations affiliated to the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). It was won for the first time by Red Star Belgrade on penalties in the final against Marseille; both were first-time finalists. This was only the second time that an Eastern European side had won the competition, after Steaua București of Romania in 1986. It was also the last tournament to be solely knock-out based, with a group stage added for the next season.
