1989 Wellington Local Elections
The 1989 Wellington local elections were part of the 1989 New Zealand local elections, to elect members to sub-national councils and boards. The Wellington elections cover one regional council (the Greater Wellington Regional Council), eight territorial authority (city and district) councils, three district health boards, and various community boards and licensing trusts. The polling was conducted using the standard first-past-the-post electoral method. Wellington City Council The Wellington City Council consists of a mayor and twenty-one councillors elected from seven wards (Eastern, Lambton, Northern, Onslow, Southern, Tawa, Western). ''The Evening Post'' (8 February 1865 – 6 July 2002) was an afternoon metropolitan daily newspaper based in Wellington, New Zealand. It was founded in 1865 by Dublin-born printer, newspaper manager and leader-writer Henry Blundell, who brought his large family to New Zealand in 1863. With his partner from what proved to be a false-start at Havelock, David Curle, who left the partnership that July, Henry and his three sons printed with a hand-operated press and distributed Wellington's first daily newspaper, ''The Evening Post'', on 8 February 1865. Operating from 1894 as Blundell Bros Limited, his sons and their descendants continued the very successful business which dominated its circulation area. Ian William Lawrence (29 December 1937 – 8 March 2019) was an Australian-born New Zealand lawyer, who served as the mayor of Wellington from 1983 to 1986. Biography Early life and career Lawrence was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on 29 December 1937. As a youth, he was an active member of the Boy Scouts. Sir Roderick Bignell Weir (14 July 1927 – 15 November 2021) was a New Zealand businessman. Early life and family Weir was born in Palmerston North on 14 July 1927, the son of Clarice Mildred ( Bignell) and Cecil Alexander Weir. His younger sister is the organist Dame Gillian Weir, and his brother (1929–2016) was the bookseller and businessman Graham Ashley Weir. He received his schooling at Wanganui Boys' College, now known as Whanganui City College. In 1952, Weir married Loys Agnes Wilson, and the couple had one child. Kerry Prendergast
Dame Kerry Leigh Prendergast (née Ferrier, born 28 March 1953) is a New Zealand politician who served as the 33rd Mayor of Wellington between 2001 and 2010, succeeding Mark Blumsky. She was the second woman to hold the position, after Fran Wilde. Early life Prendergast was born in Christchurch but grew up in Tawa, attending Tawa College (1966–69), where she was captain of the college netball team. Susan Margaret Piper (born 1951) is a retired New Zealand trade unionist and local politician. Biography Piper was born in Wellington in 1951. Her parents were Leon Bremmer "Pip" Piper and Margaret Neilson "Tilly" Hunter, both were trade unionists and active members of the Communist Party of New Zealand (CPNZ). John Gerald O’Brien (2 December 1924 – 13 December 2017), known as Gerald O'Brien, was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party. Early life O'Brien was born in Wellington on 2 December 1924, the son of John Thomas O'Brien, and was educated at St Patrick's College. He joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) in 1942 when he was 17 and trained as a radar operator in Harewood and Wigram. Ruth Gotlieb (née Wolman, 16 May 1923 – 23 July 2019) was a local politician in Wellington, New Zealand, serving as a Wellington City Councillor from 1983 to 2001. Biography Early life and career Gotlieb was born in England on 16 May 1923, the daughter of Joseph and Reka Wolman. The family moved to Cork, Ireland, when her father was appointed a rabbi there.
