The 1989 Tour of the Basque Country was the 29th edition of the Tour of the Basque Country cycle race and was held from 3 April to 7 April 1989. The race started in Lazkao and finished in Zumaia. The race was won by Stephen Roche of the Fagor team. Stephen Roche
Stephen Roche (; born 28 November 1959) is an Irish former professional road racing cyclist. In a 13-year professional career, he peaked in 1987, becoming the second of only two cyclists to win the Triple Crown of victories in the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia general classification, plus the World road race championship, the first was Eddy Merckx. Roche's rise coincided with that of fellow Irishman Sean Kelly. Although one of the finest cyclists of his generation and admired for his pedalling style, he struggled with knee injuries and never contended in the Grand Tours post-1987. He had 58 professional career wins. All of these wins still stand, despite Roche having been accused by an Italian judge of taking EPO in the later part of his career. Pedro Muñoz Machín Rodríguez
Pedro Muñóz Machín Rodríguez (born 6 November 1958 in Mieres) is a former Spanish professional road bicycle racer. He won a stage in the 1981 Vuelta a España and finished on the podium in 2nd place overall. He received a penalty for testing positive for the stimulant Methylphenidate (Ritalin) on stage 17 of the 1982 Vuelta a España. He finished the race in 25th overall. In 1983 he finished in 8th place overall at the Vuelta and won a stage in the 1983 Giro d'Italia finishing in 11th place overall. In 1984 he rode the Tour de France for the first time and performed well. He finished 2nd to Greg LeMond in the Young rider classification and 8th place overall. In 1985 he Did Not Start the 9th stage of the Vuelta and Did Not Finish the 15th stage of the Tour. Marino Lejarreta
Marino Lejarreta Arrizabalaga (born 14 May 1957) is a retired Basque professional road racing cyclist. His biggest victory was capturing the 1982 Vuelta a España, a Grand Tour stage race, and he is the inaugural and record three-time winner of the Clásica de San Sebastián (1981, 1982, 1987), which is now considered a one-day classic. In 1989, Lejarreta captured the Volta a Catalunya repeating one of his first professional wins in 1980 at the same event. Career Lejarreta rode very well in the 1982 Vuelta, but initially finished 2nd to Ángel Arroyo while coming in just eighteen seconds ahead of Michel Pollentier. Following the race however, Arroyo and several other riders failed doping controls in one of the biggest scandals in Vuelta history making the young Basque rider the de facto winner of the race. The town has two beaches (Itzurun and Santiago), which are of interest to geologists because they are situated among the longest set of continuous rock strata in the world.
