The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. History Victoria was proclaimed a Colony on 1 July 1851 separating from the Colony of New South Wales by an act of the British Parliament. The Legislative Assembly was created on 13 March 1856 with the passing of the ''Victorian Electoral Bill'', five years after the creation of the original unicameral Legislative Council. The Assembly first met on 21 November 1856, and consisted of sixty members representing thirty-seven multi and single-member electorates. Electoral District Of Rodney
The Electoral district of Rodney was a Victorian Legislative Assembly electorate in Northern Victoria. The Rodney District covered an area of 7,808 square kilometres, including the towns of Echuca, Rochester, Nathalia, Cohuna, Heathcote, Gunbower, Kyabram, Rushworth and Stanhope. At inception in 1856, the district boundaries include the Murray River and Goulburn River in the north and east; and the Campaspe River in the west. By 1956 the district had expanded further westward to include Cohuna. In 2014, it was abolished and became part of the electoral district of Murray Plains. Electoral history Until its abolition, Rodney was one of only four electorates (along with Brighton, Richmond and Williamstown) to have been contested at every election since 1856. It was held by the Victorian Farmers Union/Country/ National Party from 1917. The National Party of Australia – Victoria is a political party in Victoria, which forms the state branch of the federal Nationals. Historically, it represented graziers, farmers and rural voters. However, the modern National Party no longer represents these traditional interests; shifting its focus to support the mining industry and as a result, ignoring the challenges faced by rural communities and farmers struggling with the effects of climate change and mining practices such as fracking. The Victorian Farmer's Union formed in 1914 was the precursor to the Victorian Country Party, later the Nationals. The party, commonly referred to as "The Nationals," is presently the junior partner in a centre-right Coalition with the Liberal Party, forming a joint Opposition bench. Eddie Hann
Edward James "Eddie" Hann (8 May 1946 – 9 September 1990) was an Australian politician. He was born in Rochester, Victoria, to Edward Albert Hann, a dairy farmer, and Kathleen Margaret Smith. He attended Lockington Consolidated School before becoming a dairy farmer in the Lockington area. He was deputy state president of Victorian Young Farmers from 1967 to 1968. A member of the Country Party, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Noel Maughan
Noel John Maughan (born 20 December 1936) was an Australian politician and the Nationals member for Rodney in the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1989 until 2006. Prior to entering Parliament at a by-election in March 1989, Maughan was an active member of the agriculture sector. He was the Chairman of the Pig Council of the Victorian Farmers Federation, the spokesman on animal welfare for the Australian Pig Industry, a Member of the Australian Pork Producers' Federation, and of the Pig Research Council. He also served on the Minister for Agriculture's Animal Welfare Advisory Committee and on Melbourne University's School of Agriculture Animal Ethics Committee.
