1989 Ohio Valley Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1989 Ohio Valley Conference Men's Basketball Tournament was the final event of the 1988–89 season in the Ohio Valley Conference. The tournament was held March 7-9, 1989 on campus sites and at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. Middle Tennessee State defeated in the championship game, 82–79, to win their fifth OVC men's basketball tournament. The Blue Raiders received an automatic bid to the 1989 NCAA Tournament as the #13 seed in the Southeast region. Nashville Municipal Auditorium
The Nashville Municipal Auditorium is an indoor sports and concert venue in Nashville, Tennessee. It opened October 7, 1962 with both an arena and exhibition hall. The former exhibition hall has been permanent home to the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum since 2013. Nashville Municipal Auditorium was previously home to various teams, most notably the Belmont Bruins of the National Collegiate Athletic Association from 2001–2003. 1988–89 Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders Men's Basketball Team
The 1988–89 Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders men's basketball team represented Middle Tennessee State University during the 1988–89 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Blue Raiders, led by fifth-year head coach Bruce Stewart, played their home games at the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and were members of the Ohio Valley Conference. They finished the season 23–8, 10–2 in OVC play to win the regular season championship. In the OVC tournament, they defeated Eastern Kentucky and Austin Peay to receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. 1989 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1989 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 16, 1989, and ended with the championship game on April 3 in Seattle. A total of 63 games were played. Michigan, coached by Steve Fisher, won the national title with an 80–79 overtime victory in the final game over Seton Hall, coached by P. J. Carlesimo. Glen Rice of Michigan set an NCAA tournament record by scoring 184 points in six games and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Just prior to the start of this tournament, Michigan coach Bill Frieder had announced that he would accept the head coaching position at Arizona State University at the end of the season.
