The first contested New Democratic Party of Newfoundland and Labrador leadership election was held in 1989 on March 18 in St. John's. Peter Fenwick (politician)
Peter Fenwick (born July 18, 1944) is a Canadian politician. He is a former leader of the Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party. Fenwick was born in St. Thomas, Ontario to Digby and Benoit Fenwick of Montreal and Stanbridge East. He and his wife Jennifer moved to Cape St George, Newfoundland in 1968 and had six children. His oldest son attended school at Notre Dame du Cap in the first early immersion French program in 1975 of which five of the six graduated. He was a community college teacher when he was acclaimed provincial NDP leader at the party's convention on November 8, 1981. Fenwick was first elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly in a 1984 by-election in Menihek, Labrador. He was the first member of the party to be elected to a seat in the House of Assembly. He was re-elected in 1985. Cle Newhook
Cleophas (Cle) Newhook (June 3, 1943 – March 2, 2018) was a Canadian theologian, author and politician in Newfoundland. Newhook was leader of the Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party from 1989 to 1992 but was unsuccessful in several attempts to win a seat for himself in the House of Assembly. Prior to becoming party leader he was the NDP's executive secretary as well as a candidate. The Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party (NL NDP) is a social democratic political party in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is a provincial section of the federal New Democratic Party. It was formed in 1961 as the successor to the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and the Newfoundland Democratic Party. The party first contested the 1962 provincial election. The party won its first seat in the House of Assembly in 1984 and has been represented in the legislature since 1990. Lorraine Michael was elected leader of the NL NDP at the party's leadership election on May 28, 2006. Gene Long (born 1957) is a former politician in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. He was elected in 1986 as the New Democratic Party member of the House of Assembly for the riding of St. John's East. The New Democratic Party of Newfoundland and Labrador held their leadership convention from May 26–28, 2006. This leadership election was called to elect a new leader to succeed Jack Harris, who had served as party leader since 1992. Harris had also served as Member of the House of Assembly for Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi since a 1990 by-election. In the end Lorraine Michael won the party's leadership, defeating writer Nina Patey.
