1989 Falkland Islands General Election
The Falkland Islands general election of 1989 was held on Thursday 12 October 1989 to elect members to the Legislative Council. Eight Councillors were elected through universal suffrage using block voting, four from each constituency (Camp and Stanley). Three candidates stood for the Desire the Right Party, one of the only political parties in the history of the Falkland Islands which normally acts as a non-partisan democracy, however none of the party's candidates were elected. Legislative Council Of The Falkland Islands
The Legislative Council of the Falkland Islands (sometimes referred to as LEGCO) was the unicameral legislature of the Falkland Islands from 13 November 1845 until 1 January 2009. The new constitution came into force in 2009 and replaced the Legislative Council with the Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands. History Immediately following the United Kingdom's re-establishment of rule over the Falklands in 1833, the islands were under military law by Naval Administrators appointed by the Admiralty. In the early 1840s, colonists from the UK began to settle on the islands which led Lord Stanley, Secretary of State for the Colonies, to seek authorisation from Parliament to establish a legislative power on the Falklands. Bill Luxton
William Robert Luxton (born 1940) is a Falkland Islander farmer and politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Camp constituency from the 2009 general election until his resignation in 2011. Luxton was also a Member of the Legislative Council from 1989 to 2001, and served on the Executive Council of the Falkland Islands in the 1980s. Luxton was born in the Falkland Islands and educated in the United Kingdom before moving back to the islands to manage his family's farm at Chartres. In 1982 Argentina invaded and occupied the Falklands for 74 days during which time Luxton was identified by the Argentine military junta as a potential troublemaker. Along with his wife, Patricia, and their children, Luxton was deported to the UK where he became notable for giving numerous interviews about his experiences with the Argentine military. Elections In The Falkland Islands
The politics of the Falkland Islands takes place in a framework of a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary representative democratic dependency as set out by the constitution, whereby the Governor exercises the duties of head of state in the absence of the monarch and the Chief Executive is the head of the Civil Service, with an elected Legislative Assembly to propose new laws, national policy, approve finance and hold the executive to account. The islands, an archipelago in the southern Atlantic Ocean, are a self-governing British overseas territory. Mike Rendell
Michael Rendell (born 1944) is a British-born Falkland Islands politician and former Royal Marine who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Camp constituency from 2005 until 2009. Rendell was elected as a Member of the Legislative Council, which was reconstituted into the Legislative Assembly with the implementation of the 2009 Constitution. Rendell grew up in Devon and joined the Royal Marines aged sixteen, going on to serve in the Special Boat Service. In the 1970s Rendell was stationed in the Falkland Islands as part of Naval Party 8901. It was during this time that he met and married Falkland Islander Phyl Oliver. After working for six years in Saudi Arabia, Rendell returned to the Falklands in 1982, serving as a member of the Falkland Islands Defence Force. Gavin Short
Gavin Phillip Short (born 1962) is a Falkland Islands politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Stanley constituency from 2009 until 2017. He was previously a Member of the Legislative Council from 1989–1993. Short works for Cable & Wireless and is the Chairman of the General Employees' Union. He is a former member of the Falkland Islands Defence Force and a volunteer fireman. In November 2009 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly for Stanley, and in June 2010 he represented the Falklands at the annual meeting of the UN Special Committee on Decolonisation in New York City. Terry Peck
Terence John Peck (2 August 1938 – 30 December 2006) was a member of the Falkland Islands Defence Force who during the 1982 Falklands War became a war hero by spying on the Argentine invaders, subsequently escaping to British lines, acting as a Reconnaissance, scout for 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment (United Kingdom), Parachute Regiment, and taking part in the fighting for Battle of Mount Longdon, Mount Longdon. Norma Edwards
Norma Edwards OBE is a Falkland Islands politician. She served for two decades on the Falkland Islands Legislative Council and has been described as a "noted hard-liner" in opposition to Argentine control of the islands. Edwards is a native Falkland Islander, the fourth generation born on the islands. She pursued her early schooling there before leaving for the United Kingdom, where she trained as a nurse. She lived for a time in Portsmouth, England, where her daughters Emma and Rebecca were born, before returning to the Falklands with her family after the 1982 war. She was first elected to the Falkland Islands Legislative Council to represent Stanley in 1985, the first election after the islands' 1985 constitution came into force. Jane Cameron National Archives
The Jane Cameron National Archives are the official national archives of the Falkland Islands. Government records in the Falklands were started by the first Governor of the Falkland Islands, Richard Moody, in 1841. The records were initially kept in Stanley Town Hall and the Secretariat Building and remained largely intact, despite fires in 1944 and 1959. In 1989 the Falkland Islands Government created the post of Government Archivist to look after the archives. The inaugural holder of the position was Jane Cameron, who was the granddaughter of a former Governor of the Falklands and a sibling to the Falkland Islands' UK Representative, Sukey Cameron. The archives were moved to a custom made building on Jeremy Moore Avenue in Stanley in 1998. On 26 December 2009 Jane Cameron died from injuries she had sustained the previous month in a car crash while travelling in Argentina.
