Mireya Luis
Alejandrina Mireya Luis Hernández, often referred to as Mireya (born August 25, 1967 in Camagüey) is a retired Cuban volleyball player. Life At the age of 10 she started playing volleyball. At 16, Mireya joined the Cuban national team for the 1983 Pan-American Games, in which Cuba took first place. She would play with them again in the 1987 Games, and Cuba would again win the tournament. After a brief hiatus due to injury, she resumed play in 1990 at the World Championship in Japan where the Cuban team finished fourth. In 1991 she led the Cuban team to win its first ever World Cup in Mexico . Mireya won her first Olympic gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics, 1992 Games in Barcelona with team mate Regla Bell. She would win a second gold in 1996 Olympic Games, Atlanta in 1996, again playing with the Cuban national team. Magaly Carvajal
Magalys Carvajal Rivera (born December 18, 1968) is a Cuban Volleyball Player, World champion and Olympic champion. She led Cuba to Olympic Gold Medals in the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Games. She also helped Cuba to win the World Gold Medal in 1994. She has been called the greatest middle blocker to ever play the sport of women's volleyball, standing at 6' 3" tall. Known for shutting down the greatest hitters in the world. Her vertical jump (11 feet) is rivaled only by teammate Mireya Luis. Her stare is known to intimidate any player at the net, and has been called by many of her peers "the look of death". She was a dominant blocker and hitter in the world during her time as a starter for the Cuban National Team. Magaly is still an active player in 2009 for Ciudad Las Palmas G.C. Chang Yoon-hee
Chang Yoon-hee (; born ) is a retired South Korean female volleyball player. She was part of the South Korea women's national volleyball team. On the club level she played with Honam Oil, which later became LG Oil and then GS Caltex. Chang made a strong start to her career by winning the Most Valuable Player of the Year award in 1989. She was named "best server" at the 1989 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup, and "best defender" at the 1991 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup. In 1996, she stated that she had no intention of getting married or retiring in the near future. After the 1996 Summer Olympics, she stepped down from the national team, but continued to play at the club level. She married national cycling team member Lee Kyung-hwan in April 1997. Kumi Nakada
is a former professional volleyball player and former coach of Hisamitsu Springs. She led Japan to a bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics while still in high school and, despite serious and chronic knee injuries, remained one of the world's top setters until her retirement from the sport in 1993. Unusually for a Japanese athlete, Nakada was (and still is) remembered by opponents and teammates alike for her volatile temper, fiery competitiveness, and outspoken manner both on and off the court. FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup
The FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup is an international volleyball competition contested by the senior women's national teams of the members of ' (FIVB), the sport's global governing body. Initially the tournament was played in the year following the Olympic Games, but since 1991 the World Cup has been awarded in the year preceding the Olympic Games. The current champion is China, which won its fifth title at the 2019 tournament. The current format of the competition involves 12 teams, including the automatically qualifying host nation Japan, competing in the tournament phase for the title at venues within the host nation over a period of about two weeks.
