1988–89 Atlanta Hawks Season
The 1988–89 NBA season was the Hawks' 40th season in the National Basketball Association, NBA and 21st season in Atlanta. After falling into the second round of the playoffs for three straight seasons, the Hawks signed free agent and All-Star forward Moses Malone, and acquired Reggie Theus from the 1987–88 Sacramento Kings season, Sacramento Kings during the off-season. However, Kevin Willis was out with a broken foot suffered during the preseason, and was later on suspended indefinitely for missing functions and rehabilitation therapy. The Hawks held a 28–19 record at the All-Star break, posted a nine-game winning streak in April, and reached 50 wins for the fourth consecutive season, finishing third in the Central Division with a 52–30 record. Michael Robert Fratello (born February 24, 1947) is an American sports broadcaster and a professional basketball coach. Fratello is currently an analyst for Fox Sports Ohio for the Cavaliers and a part-time color commentator for Fox Sports West for the Clippers when they play on the road. 1989 NBA All-Star Game
The 39th National Basketball Association All-Star Game was held at Houston on February 12, 1989. Karl Malone was named the NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player (MVP). The east was composed of Mark Jackson, Kevin McHale, Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, Isiah Thomas, Dominique Wilkins, Mark Price, Terry Cummings, Larry Nance and Brad Daugherty. The west was led by the Utah Jazz trio of Karl Malone, John Stockton and Mark Eaton; the Lakers' James Worthy, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Clyde Drexler, Alex English, Chris Mullin, Akeem Olajuwon, Tom Chambers, Dale Ellis and Kevin Duckworth. Jon Koncak
Jon Francis Koncak (born May 17, 1963) is an American former professional basketball player. A 7'0" center from Southern Methodist University (SMU), Koncak was selected with the fifth pick in the 1985 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks. Koncak spent ten seasons with the Hawks (1985–1995), mainly in a reserve role, then concluded his career with the Orlando Magic. He retired in 1996 with career totals of 3,520 points and 3,856 rebounds. Koncak received a six-year, $13 million contract from the Hawks in 1989 – an unprecedented total for a reserve. Since he was a restricted free agent at the time, the Atlanta Hawks matched this offer from the Detroit Pistons. As a result, he earned the derisive nickname "Jon Contract". Cliff Levingston
Clifford Eugene Levingston (born January 4, 1961) is an American professional basketball coach and former player. Professional playing career A former power forward, Levingston played in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Levingston starred at Wichita State University, before being drafted by the Detroit Pistons in the 1982 NBA draft. After two seasons with the Pistons, he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks, with whom he would spend most of his career. John Sidney Battle (born November 9, 1962) is a retired American professional basketball player and pastor. A 6' 2" (1.88 m) guard from Rutgers University, Battle was selected in the fourth round of the 1985 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. He ended his career with 5,338 points. Glenn Anton "Doc" Rivers (born October 13, 1961) is an American professional basketball coach and former player who is the head coach for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). After playing for Marquette University for three seasons, Rivers was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association in 1983. Kevin Alvin Willis (born September 6, 1962) is an American former professional basketball player mostly known for playing with the Atlanta Hawks in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was a 7-foot power forward/center. Excluding players not yet eligible, he holds the record for most games played among those not in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Willis is one of fifteen players in NBA history with over 16,000 career points and 11,000 career rebounds. He was named to the NBA Eastern Conference All-Star Team in 1992, when he finished the season with a career-high average of 15.5 rebounds a game. 1987–88 Sacramento Kings Season
The 1987-88 NBA season was the Kings' 39th season in the NBA and third in Sacramento. Playing under two coaches Bill Russell, and Jerry Reynolds during the season, the Kings finished sixth in the Midwest Division with a 24–58 record. Top draft pick Kenny Smith made the All-Rookie Team. Following the season, Otis Thorpe was traded to the Houston Rockets for Rodney McCray, LaSalle Thompson was traded to the Indiana Pacers for Wayman Tisdale, and the Kings moved out of ARCO Arena I for ARCO Arena II.
