1988 Victorian State Election
The 1988 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 1 October 1988, was for the 51st Parliament of Victoria. It was held in the Australian state of Victoria to elect all 88 members of the state's Legislative Assembly and 22 members of the 44-member Legislative Council. The incumbent Labor Party government led by Premier John Cain Jr. won a third term in office, despite a swing against it, and only lost the seat of Warrandyte in Melbourne's north-east. This was credited by commentators to a strong campaign targeting Liberal leader Jeff Kennett whose aggressive leadership style was still seen as a liability, as well as continuing instability in the federal Coalition. Labor's narrow wins in middle class marginal seats saw it retain its majority despite the Liberals winning a bare majority of the two party preferred vote. Victorian Legislative Assembly
The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. The Liberal–National Coalition, commonly known simply as "the Coalition" or informally as the LNP, is an alliance of centre-right political parties that forms one of the two major groupings in Australian federal politics. Electoral District Of Bendigo West
Bendigo West is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria. It is a electorate centred on the city of Bendigo west of the Yungera railway line, and including surrounding rural towns to the west and south-west. It encompasses the localities of Bendigo City, California Gully, Castlemaine, Harcourt, Long Gully, Maldon, Marong, Newstead and West Bendigo. It also includes parts of the Bendigo suburbs of Eaglehawk, Golden Square and Kangaroo Flat. It lies within the Northern Victoria Region of the upper house, the Legislative Council. Graham Ernst
Graham Keith Ernst (born 16 March 1940) is a former Australian trade unionist and politician. He was an Australian Labor Party member of the Parliament of Victoria from 1979 to 1992. Biography Ernst was born in Yorketown, South Australia, to Frederick Ernst, a farmer, and Leta Grace Bittner. He attended state schools in Cranbrook and Portland before becoming a fitter and turner at the Portland Superphosphate Works, where he was elected as shop steward for the Amalgamated Metal Workers Union (AMWU). He also worked as the manager of a bakery and operated an engineering workshop in Portland. Heavily involved in the union movement, Ernst was founding junior vice-president of the South West Trades and Labour Council and president of the local branch of the AMWU. In 1973 Ernst moved to Geelong where he became president of the Geelong branch of the AMWU (now renamed the Amalgamated Metal Workers and Shipwrights Union) and junior vice-president of the Geelong Trades Hall Council. Electoral District Of Bellarine
The electoral district of Bellarine is one of the electoral districts of Victoria, Australia, for the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It covers an area of stretching from the Bellarine Peninsula to the outer eastern suburbs of Geelong. It includes the towns of Barwon Heads, Clifton Springs, Drysdale, Indented Head, Ocean Grove, Point Lonsdale, Portarlington and Queenscliff and the Geelong suburbs of Leopold and Moolap. It lies within the Western Victoria Region of the upper house, the Legislative Council. The seat was first created in a redistribution prior to the 1967 election but was abolished and replaced by Geelong East and South Barwon in 1976. Frank Sheehan (Australian Politician)
Francis Patrick Sheehan (17 August 1937 – 5 May 2021) was an Australian politician and community advocate from Ballarat. Sheehan was born in Ballarat to farmer Cornelius Joseph Sheehan and Kathleen Veronica O'Donohue. He attended local Catholic schools and became a motor trades instructor, with a Trained Trade Instructors Certificate and Diploma of Technical Education from Hawthorn State College. From 1964 to 1966 he was national president of Young Christian Workers; in 1967 he joined the Labor Party. In 1982 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the member for Ballarat South. He served until 1992, when his seat was abolished and he was defeated in Ballarat East. The Cain II Ministry was the 62nd ministry of the Government of Victoria. It was led by the then Premier of Victoria, John Cain Jr., of the Australian Labor Party. Louis Joseph Hill (born 31 August 1944) is a Dutch-born Australian former - barrister, member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, Victorian Magistrate and currently a Nationally Accredited Mediator and recreational sailor He was born in Utrecht to clerk Louis Hill and Theodora Kleinhans and migrated to Australia in 1953. He attended St Francis Xavier's in Frankston, St Bede's in Mentone and then Melbourne University, where he received a Bachelor of Law in 1973 (and much later, in 1996, a Master of Law). Craig Stephen Bildstien (born 20 November 1957) in an Australian journalist and former politician, who was a Liberal Party member for the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Mildura from 1988 to 1996. Born in Mildura, he attended Merbein High School.
