1988 United Kingdom Local Elections
Local elections were held in the United Kingdom in 1988. The Conservative government held its ground and remained ahead in the projected popular vote. The election resulted in the Conservative Party (UK), Conservative Party winning 39% of the popular vote, the Labour Party (UK), Labour Party winning 38% and the Liberal Democrats (UK), Social and Liberal Democrats (SLD) 18%. The Conservatives gained 9 seats, Labour gained 76 seats and the SLD lost 122 seats. These were the first national elections contested by the SLD, which had just been formed as a merger of the SDP and Liberals after several years of an SDP–Liberal Alliance, alliance existing between the two parties. Margaret Thatcher
Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher (; 13 October 19258 April 2013) was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and Leader of the Conservative Party (UK), Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. The Metropolitan Borough of Bury is a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester in North West England, just north of Manchester, to the east of Bolton and west of Rochdale. The borough is centred around the town of Bury, Greater Manchester, Bury but also includes other towns such as Ramsbottom, Tottington, Greater Manchester, Tottington, Radcliffe, Greater Manchester, Radcliffe, Whitefield, Greater Manchester, Whitefield and Prestwich. Kirklees is a local government district of West Yorkshire, England, governed by Kirklees Council with the status of a metropolitan borough.
