1988 Tour Of Flanders
The 72nd running of the Tour of Flanders cycling classic was held on 3 April 1988. Van der Poel was dropped on the Bosberg and Anderson made several frantic efforts to distance the fast Planckaert on the final run-in towards Meerbeke. ''Het Nieuwsblad'' (; en, The Newspaper) is a Flemish newspaper that mainly focusses on "a broad view" regarding politics, culture, economics, lifestyle, society and sports. History and profile In 1929, ''Het Nieuwsblad'' was published by ''De Standaard'' for the first time. In 1939, the sports paper ''Sportwereld'' (established in 1912) was purchased by De Standaard and turned into a daily supplement to their two main newspapers, "De Standaard" and "Het Nieuwsblad". In 1957, three other newspapers were purchased by ''De Standaard'' and initially kept in circulation. Meerbeke
Meerbeke is a village in the Denderstreek in the province of East Flanders in Belgium. Administratively it is part of the municipality of Ninove. This rural community is located along the Dender River on the western border of what is known as "Pajottenland". With a total surface of 1056ha it is the second largest village in Ninove (behind Denderwindeke). With 5.888 inhabitants (in 2021) it's the most populated village in Ninove, next to the centre of Ninove itself. Steven Rooks
Steven Rooks (born 7 August 1960) is a former Dutch professional road racing cyclist known for his climbing ability. His professional career ran from 1982–1995. Career In the 1988 Tour de France, Rooks finished second and won a finish on L’Alpe d’Huez. He won the polka dot jersey for the mountains classification and the Présence Classification (or combination classification). In the 1989 Tour, Rooks won Stage 15, a 39 km mountain top time trial to Orcières-Merlette; he finished seventh that year and again won the Présence Classification, the final year of that award. Other victories include the 1983 Liège–Bastogne–Liège, the 1986 Tour de Luxembourg and Amstel Gold Race, a stage at the 1987 Tour de Suisse, the 1988 Züri-Metzgete, and 1994 national championship. Kas (cycling Team)
Kas was a Spanish-based professional cycling team which was active from 1958 until 1979 and again for three years in the 1980s. Its name was derived from the name of the principal sponsor of the team, the soft drinks manufacturer, Kas. The team was principally based in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. Its riders typically wore a jersey that consisted of yellow and blue. Leberg
The Leberg is a hill and uphill street in Elst, part of the municipality of Brakel, in the Belgian province of East Flanders. Its top is at 99 m altitude, making it one of the highest hills of the Zwalm region, just north of the Flemish Ardennes. The road has an asphalt surface and links the valley town of Elst to the hilltop town of Zegelsem. Cycling The climb is best known from road bicycle racing, where it regularly features in the Flemish races in spring, most notably the Tour of Flanders. The Leberg is 700 m high, and has an average gradient of 6.1% with its steepest point, 14%, in a right-hand curve at the bottom of the climb. Eikenberg
The Eikenberg (English: ''Oak Hill'') is a hill and road in the municipality of Maarkedal, in the Belgian province of East Flanders. With an 82 m altitude top, it is one of many hill formations in the Flemish Ardennes, in the south of East Flanders. The slopes of the hill are paved in cobbles, with a road gradually winding upwards from the Maarke brook to the top in Kerzelare village, 3 km east of Oudenaarde. Kortekeer
Kortekeer is the name of an uphill road in the municipality of Maarkedal, in the Belgian province of East Flanders. With its top at 88 m, it is one of the many hills in the Flemish Ardennes. The road is narrow with steep bankings on either side with an asphalted surface. The steepest point is 17.1%. It was the epicenter of one of the most powerful earthquakes ever measured in Belgium, at 5.5 on the Richter scale in 1938. Cycling The hill is best known from road bicycle racing, where it regularly features the Flemish races in spring, most notably the Tour of Flanders. The uphill slopes of the Kortekeer start gently before steadily getting tougher as it winds its way through the woods. Paterberg
The Paterberg is a hill in the municipality of Kluisbergen, in the Belgian province of East Flanders. With its top at 80 m, it is one of many hill formations in the Flemish Ardennes, close to Wallonia. Oude Kwaremont
The Oude Kwaremont (English: ''Old Kwaremont'') is a road in Kluisbergen, a municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The Oude Kwaremont, contrary to popular belief, is not the name of a hill, but the name of one of the cobbled roads leading up the Kluisberg hill. The Kluisberg is one of several hill formations in the Flemish Ardennes in the south of East-Flanders, close to the border with Wallonia. Molenberg (Zwalm)
The Molenberg (Mill Hill) is a hill in the municipality of Zwalm, in the Belgian province of East Flanders, with its top at 56 m. It is the one of the many hills in the Zwalm region, just north of the Flemish Ardennes. Ninove () is a city and municipality located in the Flemish province of East Flanders in Belgium. It is situated on the river Dender, and is part of the Denderstreek.
