1988 Toronto Municipal Election
The 1988 Toronto municipal election was held to elect members of municipal councils, school boards, and hydro commissions in the six municipalities that made up Metropolitan Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The election was held November 14, 1988. This election also marked the abolition of Boards of Control in North York, Etobicoke, Scarborough, and York. The Toronto Board of Control had been abolished in 1969. Metro The 1988 campaign was the first time most members of Metro Toronto were directly elected. Toronto had moved to direct elections in 1985, but the other cities had still had a selection of council members dually seated at Metro. Art Eggleton
Arthur C. Eggleton (born September 29, 1943) is a retired Canadian politician who served as the 59th and longest-serving mayor of Toronto from 1980 to 1991. He was elected to Parliament in 1993, running as a Liberal in York Centre and served as a member of Parliament (MP) until 2004 when he declined to seek re-election. Eggleton held a number of cabinet positions from 1993 to 2002 including Treasury Board president, minister of infrastructure, minister of international trade, and minister of national defence. He was appointed to the Senate in 2005, serving until he reached the mandatory retirement age of 75 in 2018. Lois Griffin (politician)
Lois Griffin (born ) is a former Metro Toronto councillor (Rexdale-Thistletown) and Chair of the Toronto Transit Commission from 1989 to 1991. She was the first woman to hold the post. In late 1999, she represented the Humber Watershed Alliance at a water workshop, as part of Toronto's city planning vision workshop series. Ward 22 Scarborough—Agincourt
Ward 22 Scarborough—Agincourt is a municipal ward in the Scarborough section of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It's represented on Toronto City Council by Nick Mantas. It covers the area of the City of Toronto bounded by Steeles Avenue East to the north, Highway 401 to the south, Victoria Park Avenue to the west, and Midland Avenue to the east. Ken Morrish
Ken Morrish (1919 – July 30, 2006), nicknamed "Mr. Highland Creek" was a Metro Toronto politician. He served the Scarborough, Ontario community as councillor, deputy Metro Toronto Chair and mayor of Scarborough. He is a descendant of the Morrish Family, who were among the original pioneer settlers in Scarborough. Background Morrish was born in Scarborough's Highland Creek area to William D. Malvern is a neighbourhood in the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, with a population of 44,315. It is located in the northeast corner of the city. Maureen Prinsloo
Maureen Prinsloo (1938 – December 2, 2017) was a municipal politician in Scarborough, Ontario who served as Chair of the Toronto Police Services Board from 1995-98. Life Prinsloo was born in South Africa and moved to Canada with her husband in 1965. She was elected to Scarborough municipal council in 1978 and served for 10 years as an alderman. In 1985, she was one of the alderman chosen by Scarborough Council to sit on Metro Council and in 1988, she won a seat in her own right on Metro Toronto Council from the ward of Scarborough Wexford. Brian Ashton (politician)
Brian Ashton is a former Canadian politician who served as a city councillor in Toronto, Ontario. Ashton represented Ward 36 Scarborough Southwest from amalgamation in 1997 to 2010. He did not run for re-election in the 2010 municipal election and was succeeded by Gary Crawford. Following retirement, he was elected president of the Canadian National Exhibition each year from 2012 to 2016. Joan King
Joan King (born 1940 or 1941) is a former Canadian school trustee and city councillor. After holding a five-year position on the North York Board of Education from 1980 to 1985, King was a city councillor for North York from 1985 to 1997. Following the amalgamation of Toronto in 1997, she was a Toronto City Councillor from 1997 to 2000. King was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2013. Norman Gardner
Norman "Norm" Gardner (born February 13, 1938) is a politician and administrator in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He is a former North York and Toronto City Councillor, serving most recently as chair of the Toronto Police Services Board (1998–2003). He was subsequently chair of the board of the Mackenzie Institute for several years. Gordon Chong
Gordon Joseph Chong (October 28, 1943 – July 13, 2018) was a Canadian politician and public servant active in Toronto. He served as a Toronto city councillor and was vice-chairman of the Toronto Transit Commission in the 1990s. Bev Salmon
Beverley Noel Salmon is an activist and former municipal politician in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Salmon was a North York city and then Metro Toronto Councillor from 1985-1997. Salmon was awarded the Order of Ontario in 2016 and the Order of Canada in 2017.
