The 13th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada between September 8 and September 17, 1988. ''Midnight Madness'' programme was introduced at the festival. The festival screened more than 300 films from all over the world. ''Dead Ringers'' is a 1988 psychological thriller film starring Jeremy Irons in a dual role as identical twin gynecologists. David Cronenberg directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Norman Snider. The Last Of England (film)
''The Last of England'' is a 1987 British arthouse film directed by Derek Jarman and starring Tilda Swinton. It is a poetic depiction of what Jarman felt was the loss of traditional English culture in the 1980s and his anger about Thatcher's England (including the formation of Section 28 Local Government Act), declaring it a homophobic and repressive totalitarian state. In 1986, Jarman was also diagnosed as HIV positive and had just finished his masterpiece, ''Caravaggio'', so the film is a confluence of angry imagination. It is named after '' The Last of England'', a painting by Ford Madox Brown. The painting and the film, share themes of escape and the changing of place. ''The Way Things Go'' (german: Der Lauf der Dinge) is a 1987 16 mm art film by the Swiss artist duo Peter Fischli and David Weiss. It documents a long causal chain assembled of everyday objects and industrial materials in the manner of a Rube Goldberg machine, though without the trope of accomplishing a relatively mundane task at the end. Description The installation was in the artists' Zürich warehouse studio, about 100 feet long, and incorporated materials such as tires, trash bags, ladders, soap, oil drums, old shoes, water, and gasoline. Fire and pyrotechnics were used as chemical triggers. The film is 29 minutes and 45 seconds long, but some of that is spent waiting for something to burn, dissolve, or slowly slide down a ramp. Krzysztof Pius Zanussi (born 17 June 1939) is a Polish film and theatre director, producer and screenwriter. He is a professor of European film at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland where he conducts a summer workshop. ''The Thin Blue Line'' is a 1988 American documentary film by Errol Morris, about the trial and conviction of Randall Dale Adams for the 1976 shooting of Dallas police officer Robert W. Wood. Morris became interested in the case while doing research for a film about Dr. James Grigson, a psychiatrist known in Texas as "Dr. Death" for testifying with "100 percent certainty" of a defendant's recidivism in many trials, including that of Randall Adams.
