The 1988 North Dakota gubernatorial election took place on November 8, 1988 to elect the Governor of North Dakota. Incumbent Democratic Governor George A. Sinner was reelected to a second term with 58% of the vote, defeating Republican nominee Leon Mallberg, a businessman and "anti-tax crusader" and his running mate Donna Nalewaja. Lloyd Omdahl, who had been appointed Lieutenant Governor of North Dakota in 1987 after the death of Ruth Meiers, was elected on the ticket. , this was the last time a Democrat was elected Governor of North Dakota. Donna Lou Speer Nalewaja (October 8, 1939 – September 30, 2021) was an American politician and real estate broker. Biography She ran under Leon L. Mallberg for Lieutenant Governor of North Dakota in 1988 as a Republican, and for the North Dakota United States Senate in 1998 against incumbent Byron Dorgan. Nalewaja also served in the North Dakota House of Representatives for Fargo's district 45 from 1982 to 1986, and in the North Dakota Senate from 1986 till 1998. Ruth Meiers
Ruth Meiers (November 6, 1925 – March 19, 1987) was the first female Lieutenant Governor of North Dakota. She became the 33rd Lieutenant Governor in 1985. Meiers was diagnosed with lung and brain cancer in 1986 and died in office six months later in March 1987. The Ruth Meiers Hospitality House is named in her honor. Meiers was a social worker in Mountrail County, North Dakota. In 1974, Meiers served in the North Dakota House of Representatives as a Democrat.
