1988 Dale State By-election
A by-election for the seat of Dale in the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia was held on 7 May 1988. It was triggered by the resignation of Cyril Rushton (the sitting Liberal member and a former deputy premier) on 25 February 1988. The seat was retained by the Liberal Party, with their candidate, Fred Tubby, winning 59.1 percent of the two-candidate-preferred (2CP) vote. The Labor Party did not stand at the election, despite having lost the seat by less than 400 votes at the 1986 state election. A former Labor candidate, Michael Marsh, won 40.9 percent of the 2CP vote standing as an independent. Background Cyril Rushton had held Dale for the Liberal Party since a 1965 by-election, and served as a minister in the governments of Sir Charles Court and Ray O'Connor (including as deputy premier under the latter). A by-election, also known as a special election in the United States and the Philippines, a bye-election in Ireland, a bypoll in India, or a Zimni election (Urdu: ضمنی انتخاب, supplementary election) in Pakistan, is an election used to fill an office that has become vacant between general elections. Charles Court
Sir Charles Walter Michael Court, (29 September 1911 – 22 December 2007) was a Western Australian politician, and the 21st Premier of Western Australia from 1974 to 1982. He was a member of the Liberal Party. Early life Court's family emigrated from his birthplace Crawley, Sussex, England, to Perth when he was 6 months old. He went to primary school in Leederville, and then to Perth Boys School. His Salvation Army parents induced him to play the cornet in their Sunday parades and he became a proficient player. He began formal music training at 12 and became a member of the RSL Memorial Band. He also inherited a strong union background from his father, a plumber, and joined the Musicians Union at the age of 14, playing in annual May Day parades. List Of Western Australian State By-elections
The list of Western Australia state by-elections includes every by-election held in the Australian state of Western Australia. By-elections occur whenever there is a vacancy in the Legislative Assembly (or, historically, the Legislative Council), although an imminent state election may allow the vacancy to remain until the dissolution of parliament. Section 67 of the ''Electoral Act 1907'' requires the Speaker to issue a writ for a by-election to fill the vacancy. This can either take place after a resolution of the House if Parliament is in session, or simply upon the cause being established by the Speaker acting alone if the Parliament is in adjournment for more than 7 days. 2001 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 10 February 2001 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. The two-term Liberal–National coalition government, led by Premier Richard Court, was defeated by the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader Dr Geoff Gallop. The election produced the biggest change of seats at any election since 1911, with Labor winning 14 seats from the Coalition as well as an Independent-held seat, while losing the seat of Kalgoorlie for the first time since 1923 to Liberal candidate Matt Birney. Electoral District Of Roleystone
Roleystone was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1989 to 2005. The district was based in the outer south-eastern suburbs and hinterland of Perth, including the south-eastern corner of the Metropolitan Region Scheme. At its abolition, the district included all or parts of the following local government councils: City of Armadale, City of Gosnells, City of Kalamunda, City of Rockingham, City of Kwinana, Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale. Roleystone was a marginal seat. It was held by the Liberal Party for most of its history, but was captured by Labor at the 2001 state election with the fall of the Court government. 1989 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 4 February 1989 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. The Labor government, led by Premier Peter Dowding, won a third term in office against the Liberal Party, led by Opposition Leader Barry MacKinnon. The result was a major swing against the Labor Party, coming in the wake of revelations of dealings between Government and business that came to be known as WA Inc. The redistribution that took place in 1988, based upon the ''Acts Amendment (Electoral Reform) Act 1987'' which abolished several country and outer metropolitan electorates while creating new metropolitan ones, makes it difficult to assess how Labor would have performed on the old boundaries—while it lost four seats, it gained one Liberal-held seat and won several of the new seats, so in net terms, it only lost one seat despite the massive swing and the low two-party-preferred result. Reg Tubby
Reginald John Tubby (1924 – 14 October 2015) was an Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1975 to 1989, representing the seat of Greenough. Tubby was born in Geraldton, Western Australia, to Constance Edith (née Jones) and John William Tubby. He was raised on his father's farm at Gutha, a locality south-east of Geraldton. Tubby enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in January 1943, and served in the Northern Territory during the war. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to Gutha, taking over an abandoned farm. Becoming prominent in agricultural circles, Tubby was elected to the Morawa Roads Board (later the Shire of Morawa) in 1953, and would serve on the council until 1976, including nine years as shire president. Ray O'Connor
Raymond James O'Connor (6 March 1926 – 25 February 2013) was an Australian politician who served as the premier of Western Australia from 25 January 1982 to 25 February 1983. He was a member of parliament from 1959 to 1984, and a minister in the governments of David Brand and Charles Court. A controversial figure, he served six months jail in 1994 for stealing a $25,000 cheque from the Bond Corporation. Early life O'Connor was born on 6 March 1926 in Perth, Western Australia, to Alphonsus Maurice O’Connor, a police officer, and Annie Moran.
