1988 Baseball World Cup
The 1988 Baseball World Cup (BWC) was the 30th international Men's amateur baseball tournament. The tournament was sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation, which titled it the Amateur World Series from the 1938 tournament through the 1986 AWS. The tournament took place, for the second time, in Italy, from August 23 to September 7, and was won by Cuba Cuba ( , ), officially the Republic of Cuba ( es, República de Cuba, links=no ), is an island country comprising the island of Cuba, as well as Isla de la Juventud and several minor archipelagos. 1986 Baseball World Cup
The 1986 Baseball World Cup, Amateur World Series was the 29th Amateur World Series (AWS), an international Men's amateur baseball tournament. The tournament took place, for the first time, in the Netherlands, from July 19 to August 2, and was won by Cuba national baseball team, Cubaits 18th AWS victory. There were 12 participating countries. This was the last time the IBAF titled it as the AWS; the next ten competitions were held under the name Baseball World Cup, then was replaced 2015 WBSC Premier12, in 2015 by the quadrennial WBSC Premier12. Takehiro Ishii
Takehiro Ishii (石井 丈裕, born October 25, 1964) is a Japanese former professional baseball pitcher. He played for the Japan national baseball team in 1988, and in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for the Seibu Lions and the Nippon-Ham Fighters from 1989 to 1999. Along with Shigeru Sugishita (1954) and Tsuneo Horiuchi (1972), he is one of only three players in NPB history to have won the Most Valuable Player Award, the Eiji Sawamura Award, and the Japan Series MVP in the same season. Biographical Information Ishii attended Waseda Jitsugyo High School and Hosei University. Ishii played for the Japanese national baseball team at the 1988 Summer Olympics and the 1988 Baseball World Cup. He led all pitchers in the 1988 Cup in strikeouts (32 in 27-1/3 IP), beating out the likes of Andy Benes, Ben McDonald, Charles Nagy, Jim Abbott, Hideo Nomo and Orlando Hernández. Lourdes Gurriel Delgado (born 25 March 1957) is a Cuban baseball player and Olympic gold medalist. Playing career Gourriel played in the Cuban National Series. He won the Cuban National Series Rookie of the Year Award during the 1976-77 Cuban National Series for Azucareros. In 1978–1979, he hit 12 doubles to tie Armando Capiró and Jorge Beltrán for the Serie Nacional lead. He debuted with the Cuba national baseball team that year, hitting .294 in the 1979 Intercontinental Cup. Gourriel led the 1979–1980 Serie Nacional with 77 hits. Constantino "Tino" Martinez (born December 7, 1967) is an American former professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, and Tampa Bay Devil Rays from 1990 through 2005. James Anthony Abbott (born September 19, 1967) is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball for the California Angels, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, and Milwaukee Brewers, from 1989 to 1999.
