1987–88 DDR-Oberliga
The 1987–88 DDR-Oberliga was the 39th season of the DDR-Oberliga, the first tier of league football in East Germany. The league was contested by fourteen teams. BFC Dynamo won the championship, the club's last of ten consecutive East German championships from 1978 to 1988. BFC Dynamo also won the FDGB-Pokal, thereby becoming the second club after Dynamo Dresden to win the double in East Germany. Andreas Thom of BFC Dynamo was the league's top scorer with 20 goals, with Thom also taking the seasons East German Footballer of the year award. On the strength of the 1987–88 title BFC Dynamo qualified for the 1988–89 European Cup where the club was knocked out in an East-West German encounter by SV Werder Bremen in the first round. DDR-Oberliga
The DDR-Oberliga (English: ''East German Premier League'' or ''GDR Premier League'') was the top-level association football league in East Germany. Overview Following World War II, separate sports competitions emerged in the occupied eastern and western halves of Germany, replacing the ''Gauligas'' of the Nazi era. In East Germany, a top-flight football competition, the highest league in the East German football league system, was established in 1949 as the DS-Oberliga (''Deutscher Sportausschuss Oberliga'', German Sports Association Upper League). East Germany–West Germany Football Rivalry
The rivalry between football teams from East Germany and West Germany lasted from 1949 to 1990. Clubs from the two countries met at official level in both national team and club competitions like the FIFA World Cup and European Cup. While the West German national team received strong support in East Germany, with supporters from the East often travelling to away matches of the West German team in Eastern Europe, encounters between teams from the East and West in European Cup competitions were often hard-fought. The DDR-Liga (English: GDR League or ''East German League'') was, prior to German reunification in 1990, the second level of football competition in the DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik or German Democratic Republic, commonly East Germany), being roughly equivalent to the 2. Bundesliga in West Germany. Overview 1950-1955 The league was established with two divisions of ten teams each in 1950 as the level of play below the DDR-Oberliga, and as such was the second tier of the East German football league system. BSG Stahl Riesa is a German association football club from Riesa in Saxony. History The club was founded as ''SC Riesa'' in 1903 in the cellar of the local pub "Bodega" and was renamed ''Riesaer SV'' two years later. In 1917, they fused with ''FC Wettin'' and went on to play quietly as a local club until 1936 when they advanced to the Gauliga Sachsen, one of sixteen divisions in the top flight of German football during the Third Reich. After World War II the club was dissolved and replaced by the ''SG Riesa'' in late 1945. BSG Stahl Brandenburg is a German association football club based in Brandenburg an der Havel, Brandenburg. History The club was formed in 1950 as ''BSG Einheit Brandenburg'' and played its earliest seasons in the II division of East German football.
