World Judo Championships
The World Judo Championships are the highest level of international judo competition, along with the Olympic judo competition. The championships are held once every year (except the years when the Olympics take place) by the International Judo Federation, and qualified judoka compete in their respective categories as representatives of their home countries. Team competitions have also been held since 1994. The men's championships began in 1956, though the format and periodicity of the championships have changed over time. The last edition of the championships took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2022. History The first edition of the world championships took place in Tokyo, Japan in 1956. There were no weight classes at the time and Japanese judoka Shokichi Natsui became the first world champion in history, defeating fellow countryman Yoshihiko Yoshimatsu in the final. Toshihiko Koga
was a Japanese judoka, 9th degree black belt and Olympic champion who competed in the -71 kg and -78 kg divisions. Koga is regarded as having perhaps the greatest ippon seoi nage ever. He died of cancer on March 24, 2021 at the age of 53. Biography Koga was born in Kitashigeyasu, Saga, Japan. He began judo in elementary school. He traveled to Tokyo during junior-high school to enter Kodogakusha, a judo school later attended by Olympic gold medalists Hidehiko Yoshida and Makoto Takimoto. He continued his education at the Nippon Sport Science University, and captured several awards including five consecutive championships at the Kodokan Cup and six consecutive championships at the All-Japan Judo Championships (all in the 71 kg division). He placed 3rd in the 1987 World Judo Championships held in Essen, and was chosen to participate in the 1988 Summer Olympics, where he lost in the 3rd round of the competition. Grigory Verichev
Grigory Vladimirovich Verichev (russian: Григорий владимирович Веричев; April 4, 1957 – May 25, 2006) was a Russia, Russian judoka who competed for the Soviet Union in the 1988 Summer Olympics. Aurélio Miguel
Aurélio Fernández Miguel (born March 10, 1964) is a Brazilian judoka and Olympic champion, and later politician. Among his best sporting achievements are his gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, and a bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Sports career Aurélio Miguel was born on March 10, 1964, in São Paulo. Due to asthma and the insistence of his father, Aurélio Marin, Aurélio Fernández Miguel began training in judo at the age of four years. Initially, Aurélio disliked judo, and as a child, was terrified of the roughness of the competitions and tournaments. As time passed, he became fond of the sport, and eventually won his first title in 1972. Aurélio Miguel then won the Paulista tournament many times, and by the year 1980, he was recognized as the best judoka in the state. Ha Hyung-Joo
Ha Hyung-joo (born June 3, 1962), also known by Ha Hyoung-zoo, is a retired judoka from South Korea. In 1981, he became the first open division champion to represent South Korea at the Asian Judo Championships in Jakarta. Densign White
Densign White (born 21 December 1961) is a male retired British judoka. White competed at the 1984, 1988 and the 1992 Summer Olympics. Judo career White won the first of his nine British titles after winning the light-middleweight division at the British Judo Championships in 1980. He stepped up in weight the following year to claim a second title and then completed three in a row when reverting back to -78kg in 1982. After settling at middleweight, he won a fourth title in 1983 before he was selected to represent Great Britain at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Masao Murata
is a retired Japanese judoka. Murata is from Ichinomiya, Aichi and moved to Moriguchi, Osaka when he was in the second grade. He belonged to Nippon Steel after graduating from Tokai University. Murata was good at Uchimata, Seoi nage, Osotogari and Deashibarai In 1987, he won a bronze medal at the World Championships held in Essen, Germany. He was also expected to get a medal in the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992 but couldn't participate due to his own Chronic, Cervical disc herniation. Murata retired in 1994.
