400 Metres
The 400 metres, or 400-meter dash, is a sprint event in track and field competitions. It has been featured in the athletics (sport), athletics programme at the Summer Olympics since 1896 for men and since 1964 for women. On a standard outdoor running track, it is one lap around the track. Runners start in staggered positions and race in separate lanes for the entire course. In many countries, athletes previously competed in the 440-yard dash (402.336 m)—which is a quarter of a mile and was referred to as the 'quarter-mile'—instead of the 400 m (437.445 yards), though this distance is now obsolete. Like other sprint disciplines, the 400 m involves the use of starting blocks. Charmaine Crooks
Charmaine Crooks (born August 8, 1962), is a Canadian athlete, five-time Olympian and Olympic Silver Medallist (LA '84, 4X400m Relay). Crooks was born in Mandeville, Jamaica, but represented Canada for close to 20 years in athletics. The first Canadian woman to run 800 metres in under two minutes, she won gold medals at the Pan American, Commonwealth, World Cup, and the World Student Games. In 1996, she had the honour of being Canada's Flag Bearer at the Opening Ceremonies of the Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games. She is the fifth child with five sisters and three brothers. Crooks won the 400 metre title at the first Pan Am Junior Championships in 1980, as well as a silver in the 4 x 400 metre relay. In 1981 she won a bronze at the World Cup in Rome as a member of the America's 4 x 400 metre relay team. Mariya Dzhumabaevna Pinigina (russian: Мария Джумабаевна Пинигина, née Kulchunova; born 9 February 1958 in Ivanovka, Kyrgyz SSR) is a former Olympic athlete who competed mainly in the 400 metres, training at Spartak in Kyiv. She represented the Soviet Union. Pinigina competed for USSR in the 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul, South Korea in the 4 x 400 metres where she won the gold medal with her team mates 400m hurdles silver medalist Tatyana Ledovskaya, 400m bronze medalist Olga Nazarova and olympic 400m champion Olga Bryzgina. That USSR relay team set a new world record of 3:15.17 minutes which is still unbeaten. She also won a bronze medal at the 1983 World Championships in Athletics. Ilrey Oliver (2 September 1962 – 26 December 2002) was a Jamaican sprint (running), sprinter. Francisca Chepkurui, HSC (born 11 September 1963) is a retired Kenyan middle-distance runner. She won the gold medal in the 400 metres at the 1987 All-Africa Games in Nairobi. Later in those games she anchored Kenya to a silver medal in set the 4 × 400 metres relay, setting a still-standing Kenyan record of 3:28.94. Later in the 1987 season, Chepkurui competed in the second-ever World Championships in Athletics in both the 400 m and the . She did not advance to the finals in either event. Helga Arendt (24 April 1964 – 11 March 2013) was a West German sprinter who competed mainly in the 400 metres. Biography Arendt was born in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1987 she finished fourth at the 1987 European Indoor Championships, only 0.01 second behind bronze medalist Cristina Pérez. Later that year she competed at the 1987 World Championships. In the 4 x 400 metres relay she finished fifth with teammates Ute Thimm, Gudrun Abt and Gisela Kinzel.
