Shot Put
The shot put is a track and field event involving "putting" (throwing) a heavy spherical ball—the ''shot''—as far as possible. The shot put competition for men has been a part of the modern Olympics since their revival in 1896, and women's competition began in 1948. History Homer mentions competitions of rock throwing by soldiers during the Siege of Troy but there is no record of any dead weights being thrown in Greek competitions. The first evidence for stone- or weight-throwing events were in the Scottish Highlands, and date back to approximately the first century. In the 16th century King Henry VIII was noted for his prowess in court competitions of weight and hammer throwing. The first events resembling the modern shot put likely occurred in the Middle Ages when soldiers held competitions in which they hurled cannonballs. Sergey Gavryushin (russian: Сергей Гаврюшин; born 27 June 1959) is a former track and field athlete for the Soviet Union who competed in the shot put. His greatest achievement was a throw of in the 1986 season. This ranked him only fifth for the year but placed him in the all-time top ten for the event. This mark continues to rank highly and places Gavryushin within the all-time top 20 athletes, as of 2016. He also ranked seventh and sixth in the global seasonal lists for 1987 and 1988, respectively. Klaus Bodenmüller
Klaus Bodenmüller (born 6 September 1962) is an Austrian former track and field athlete who competed in the shot put. He is Austria's best ever performer in the event and holds the Austrian records in athletics, Austrian records at outdoors and indoors. A silver medal at the 1991 IAAF World Indoor Championships made him the first Austrian to win a medal at the competition. His victory at the 1990 European Athletics Indoor Championships was the first time an Austrian had won a European shot put medal of any colour. He won a further bronze medal at the 1992 European Athletics Indoor Championships. He was a two-time Olympian, having competed in 1988 and 1992 – he placed sixth in the latter year. Remigius Machura () (born 3 July 1960 in Rychnov nad Kněžnou) is a retired shot putter who represented Czechoslovakia. His career highlights include a bronze medal at the first World Championships and a gold medal at the first World Indoor Championships. He also represented his country at the 1988 Summer Olympics where he finished fifth. His personal best put of 21.93 metres puts him 20th in the all-time performers list and he remains the Czech record holder in the event indoors and outdoors. Udo Beyer (born 9 August 1955) is a former East German track and field athlete who competed in the shot put. Beyer has admitted to knowingly taking part in doping while he competed for East Germany. Biography Beyer is the oldest of the six children of heating mechanic Hans-Georg Beyer and his wife Eva-Marie and was born in Stalinstadt, today Eisenhüttenstadt. Jan Sagedal (born 19 June 1960) is a retired Norwegian shot putter. He represented Froland IL, Sørild FIK and IK Tjalve. Biography He finished fourteenth at the 1984 European Indoor Championships, thirteenth at the 1990 European Indoor Championships, thirteenth at the 1991 IAAF World Indoor Championships and ninth at the 1992 European Indoor Championships. He also competed at the World Championships in 1987 and 1991 without reaching the finals. He became Norwegian champion in 1986 and 1998. His personal best throw was 20.76 metres, achieved in June 1986 in Bodø.
