1987 Walker Cup
The 1987 Walker Cup, the 31st Walker Cup Match, was played on 27 and 28 May 1987, on the Old course at Sunningdale Golf Club, Sunningdale, Berkshire, England. The event was won by the United States 16½ to 7½, their eighth successive win. The match was one-sided. The United States led 12–4 after the second day foursomes, already having retained the cup. They won 4 and halved one of the 8 remaining singles for their biggest win since 18 holes matches were introduced in 1963. Format The format for play on Wednesday and Thursday was the same. There were four matches of foursomes in the morning and eight singles matches in the afternoon. In all, 24 matches were played. Each of the 24 matches was worth one point in the larger team competition. If a match was all square after the 18th hole extra holes were not played. Sunningdale Golf Club
Sunningdale Golf Club is a golf club in Sunningdale, Berkshire, England, located approximately west-southwest of London. Sunningdale Golf Club was founded in 1900 and has two eighteen hole golf courses: the Old Course, designed by Willie Park Jr., and the New Course, designed by Harry Colt, which opened in 1923. Sunningdale has hosted many prestigious events in golf, including the British Masters, Walker Cup, Women's British Open, and The Senior Open Championship. From 2004 to 2013, Europe's International Final Qualifying tournament for The Open Championship was held over both the Old and New courses at Sunningdale. Jeremy Robinson (golfer)
Jeremy Gordon Robinson (born 21 January 1966) is an English professional golfer. Robinson was born in Scarborough and learnt the game as a junior member at Woodhall Spa Golf Club in Lincolnshire, where his father and brother were also members at the time. He was a talented junior golfer and won the Peter McEvoy Trophy in 1982. Robinson studied Economics at Florida State University in the United States, where he was twice named Most Outstanding Athlete in the Metro Conference. In 1987 he won the Brabazon Trophy, Berkshire Trophy and Philip Scrutton Jug before turning professional later that year having represented Great Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup (with a 2–2–0 record). Robert Jay Sigel (born November 13, 1943) is an American professional golfer. He enjoyed one of the more illustrious careers in the history of U.S. amateur golf, before turning pro in 1993 at age 50, when he became a member of the Senior PGA Tour, now known as the PGA Tour Champions. William Fred Mayfair (born August 6, 1966) is an American professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour. Early years and amateur career Mayfair was born in Phoenix, Arizona. Before his fifteenth birthday, he won numerous junior golf tournaments. In 1981, he was on the cover of ''Boys' Life'' magazine as "golf's junior hotshot". He attended Arizona State University and was a member of the golf team. Len Mattiace
Leonard Earl Mattiace (; born October 15, 1967) is an American professional golfer, formerly of the PGA Tour and now playing on the PGA Tour Champions. Mattiace was born in Mineola, New York. He attended Nease High School in Ponte Vedra, Florida. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1990 with a degree in Sociology. While at Wake Forest, he played on the team that won the NCAA Division I Golf Championship in 1986. He turned pro later in 1990. Mattiace first gained notability when he surged into contention in the final round of the 1998 Players Championship. Trailing by one shot going into the par-3 17th hole, he hit his tee shot into the water, his third shot into a bunker, and his fourth shot into the water. Bill Loeffler
William R. Loeffler (born August 9, 1956) is an American professional golfer. Loeffler was born in Denver, Colorado. He played college golf at Arizona State University where he won twice and was an All-American in 1977. Loeffler played on the PGA Tour in 1980 and 1981. His best finish was T-32 at the 1981 Quad Cities Open. He quit professional golf and was reinstated as an amateur by the USGA. He subsequently won the 1986 U.S. Mid-Amateur title and was a member of the winning 1987 Walker Cup team. He turned professional a second time in 1989. Loeffler was disqualified in his first appearance at a U.S. Senior Open in 2013. Bob Lewis (golfer)
Robert C. Lewis, Jr. (July 12, 1944 – March 23, 2021) was an American amateur golfer from Pepper Pike, Ohio. Lewis was born in Warren, Ohio. He played college golf at Rollins College, graduating in 1967. He won the 1968 Ohio Amateur on his 24th birthday. Lewis turned professional and played on the PGA Tour from 1971 to 1974 without much success. He then quit professional golf and had his amateur status reinstated. As an amateur, Lewis finished runner-up at the 1980 U.S. Amateur and the 1981 and 1984 U.S. Mid-Amateurs. He played on four straight U.S. Walker Cup teams (1981, 1983, 1985, 1987) – all winners. He played on the winning 1982 Eisenhower Trophy team and the 1986 team that finished second. Lewis captained the 2003 and 2005 Walker Cup teams.
