1987 Liberty Bowl
The 1987 Liberty Bowl was a college football postseason bowl game played on December 29, 1987, in Memphis, Tennessee. The 29th edition of the Liberty Bowl, the game featured the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Georgia Bulldogs. Background This was the third meeting between Arkansas and Georgia (the first two being in the 1969 Sugar Bowl and the 1976 Cotton Bowl Classic). The Razorbacks finished second in the Southwest Conference (SWC) for the third straight year. The Bulldogs finished fourth in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Ken Hatfield
Kenneth Wahl Hatfield (born June 6, 1943) is a former American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at the United States Air Force Academy (1979–1983), the University of Arkansas (1984–1989), Clemson University (1990–1993), and Rice University (1994–2005), compiling a career college football record of 168–140–4. Playing career Hatfield is a graduate of the University of Arkansas, where he starred at defensive back for the 1964 Arkansas Razorbacks football team, 1964 team that won a share of the College football national championships in NCAA Division I FBS, national championship. His punt return for a touchdown helped Arkansas beat the #1 Texas Longhorns, 14-13, in the 1964 game in Austin. Hatfield was a first team All-American punt returner for the 1964 season. Arkansas Razorbacks Football
The Arkansas Razorbacks football program represents the University of Arkansas in the sport of American football. The Razorbacks compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The program has one national championship awarded by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and Helms Athletic Foundation (HAF) in 1964, and one national championship awarded by the Foundation for the Analysis of Competitions and Tournaments (Rothman (FACT)) in 1977. John Kasay
John David Kasay (born October 27, 1969) is a former American football kicker who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 21 seasons, primarily with the Carolina Panthers. He played college football at Georgia and was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the fourth round of the 1991 NFL Draft. Kasay left the Seahawks in 1995 to sign with the expansion Panthers, whom he was a member of for 16 seasons. He became the Panthers' all-time leading scorer, while also earning Pro Bowl honors during the 1996 season and making a Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl XXXVIII. Retiring after one season with the New Orleans Saints, Kasay was the last remaining player from the inaugural Panthers team. 1969 Sugar Bowl
The 1969 Sugar Bowl was the 35th edition of the college football bowl game, played at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Wednesday, January 1. It featured the fourth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), and the #9 Arkansas Razorbacks of the Southwest Conference (SWC). Underdog Arkansas won 16–2, and split end Chuck Dicus was named the outstanding player after catching twelve passes. Teams Arkansas Guard Jim Barnes was a consensus All-American for the Razorbacks in 1968. Bill Burnett's 16 touchdowns scored tied him for eighth-most points scored nationally. The Georgia Bulldogs football program represents the University of Georgia in the sport of American football. Liberty Bowl
The Liberty Bowl is an annual American college football bowl game played in late December or early January since 1959. For its first five years, it was played at Philadelphia Municipal Stadium in Philadelphia before being held at Atlantic City (New Jersey) Convention Hall in 1964. Since 1965, the game has been held at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee. Because of the scheduling of the bowl game near the end of the calendar year, no game was played during calendar years 2008 or 2015, while two games were played in calendar years 2010 and 2016. Southwest Conference
The Southwest Conference (SWC) was an NCAA Division I college athletic conference in the United States that existed from 1914 to 1996. Composed primarily of schools from Texas, at various times the conference included schools from Oklahoma and Arkansas. For most of its history, the core members of the conference were Texas-based schools plus one in Arkansas: Baylor University, Rice University, Southern Methodist University, Texas A&M University, Texas Christian University, Texas Tech University, the University of Arkansas and the University of Texas at Austin.
