1987 California Bowl
The 1987 California Bowl was a college football postseason bowl game that featured the San Jose State Spartans and the Eastern Michigan Hurons. Background In four seasons, Eastern Michigan coach Jim Harkema had the Hurons rise from 1-10 to 2-7-2 to 4-7 to 6-5. In his fifth season, they won 9 games in the regular season along with winning the Mid-American Conference title, their first conference title since 1957. San Jose State, on the other hand, had been rising for years. They finished the season with one more victory than they did the year before as they won their 2nd straight Pacific Coast Athletic Association title, which was their 3rd title in the decade, qualifying them for their third ever California Bowl. Jim Harkema
Elson James Harkema (born June 25, 1942) is former American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Grand Valley State University (Allendale, Michigan), from 1973 to 1982 and at Eastern Michigan University from 1983 to 1992, compiling a career college football record of 109–86–6. Harkema played college football as a quarterback at Kalamazoo College. Early life, education, and playing career Harkema attended Owosso High School in Owosso, Michigan, where he played football, basketball, and tennis. He then matriculated at Kalamazoo College, where earned a total of ten varsity letters in those same three sports, and graduated in 1964 with a major in economics and a minor in physical education. Harkema earned a master's degree in 1967 from Western Michigan University. The Bahamas Bowl is an NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision college football bowl game played annually in Nassau, Bahamas, at the 15,000-seat Thomas Robinson Stadium. California Bowl
The California Bowl (later the California Raisin Bowl) was a post-season college football bowl game played annually at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, California, from 1981 to 1991. The game featured the champions of the Big West Conference (known prior to 1988 as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association) and the Mid-American Conference. In 1988, the California Raisin Advisory Board purchased the naming rights to the bowl. The game was dealt a severe blow in 1992 when Fresno State moved to the Western Athletic Conference. The MAC and Big West then moved their tie-ins to Las Vegas, Nevada and created the Las Vegas Bowl. The California Bowl made plans to hold the 1992 game without tie-ins, but was unable to find a new sponsor. When organizers came up short of a $1.75 million fundraising goal, the NCAA pulled the bowl's certification. The 2022 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl was a college football bowl game played on December 20, 2022, at Albertsons Stadium in Boise, Idaho. The 26th annual Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, the game featured the Eastern Michigan Eagles from the Mid-American Conference and the San Jose State Spartans from the Mountain West Conference. The game began at 1:33 p.m. MST and aired on ESPN. It was one of the 2022–23 bowl games concluding the 2022 FBS football season. The game pitted the San Jose State Spartans and the Central Michigan Chippewas. Rick Rasnick
Ricky Dean Rasnick (September 15, 1959 – February 13, 2019) was an American college football coach. He was the head football coach at Eastern Michigan University from 1995 to 1999. Rasnick's 1995 team was the last Eastern Michigan Eagles football team to finish with a winning record until the 2016 season, 21 years later. Early years Rasnick was born on September 15, 1959, to Jim and Donna Rasnick. He has a younger sister, Kendahl, born in 1963, and a younger brother, Ryan, born in 1967. Claude L. Gilbert (born July 10, 1932) is an American former college football coach. He served as head football coach at San Diego State University from 1973 to 1980, and San Jose State University from 1984 to 1989, compiling a career record of 99–56–3. The Big West Conference (BWC) is an American collegiate athletic conference whose member institutions participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. The conference was originally formed on July 1, 1969, as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association (PCAA), and in 1988 was renamed the Big West Conference. The conference stopped sponsoring college football after the 2000 season.
