1987 Bankstown State By-election
A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Bankstown on 31 January 1987 following the resignation of sitting Labor party member, Ric Mochalski who was facing charges over the collapse of a property trust. Mochalski gave the reason for his resignation as ill health, however the NSW Parliamentary Superannuation Fund rejected a claim based on ill health following a report from the NSW Chief Medical Officer. The Bankstown by-election was held the same day as the Heathcote by-election. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Doug Shedden (politician)
Douglas James Shedden (17 December 1937 − 13 January 2020) was an Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Bankstown in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1987 to 1999. Shedden was born in Casino, and worked as an electronics firm manager before entering politics. On 7 October 1961 he married Patricia Lewis, with whom he had a daughter. He sat on Bankstown City Council from 1977 to 1987, and was deputy mayor 1980–83. A prominent member of the local Labor Party, he was president of the Greenacre branch for twenty years. In 1987, the member for the local state seat of Bankstown, Ric Mochalski, resigned after being charged with involvement in the collapse of a property trust. Shedden was selected as the Labor candidate for the by-election, and was elected fairly easily, although independent candidate Kevin Ryan achieved 18.6% of the vote. Centre Unity Party
The Centre Unity Party (CUP) was an Australian political party. History The party was formed by Patricia Poulos in October 1986, and first contested two New South Wales state by-elections − Bankstown and Heathcote − in January 1987. At the 1990 federal election, the party contested ran five Senate tickets across multiple states, although it was not registered with the Australian Electoral Commission. Australian Democrats
The Australian Democrats is a centrist political party in Australia. Founded in 1977 from a merger of the Australia Party and the New Liberal Movement, both of which were descended from Liberal Party dissenting splinter groups, it was Australia's largest minor party from its formation in 1977 through to 2004 and frequently held the balance of power in the Senate during that time. The Democrats' inaugural leader was Don Chipp, a former Liberal cabinet minister, who famously promised to "keep the bastards honest". At the 1977 federal election, the Democrats polled 11.1 percent of the Senate vote and secured two seats. The party would retain a presence in the Senate for the next 30 years, at its peak (between 1999 and 2002) holding nine out of 76 seats, though never securing a seat in the lower house. Elaine Nile
Elaine Blanche Nile (20 March 1936 – 17 October 2011) was an Australian politician who represented the Christian Democratic Party in the New South Wales Legislative Council between 1988 and 2002. Nile was married to Fred Nile from 1958 until her death. Early life Born on 20 March 1936 in Waterloo in Sydney the daughter of a glass blower and a factory worker, she was a comptometrist from 1951 to 1958 and a police matron at Darlinghurst Court from 1977 to 1981. From 1981 to 1986 she was manager of the Australian Christian Solidarity Paper. She was also an organiser and lecturer at Gardener's Road High School in Mascot. Political career In 1958, she married Fred Nile, leader of the Call to Australia group (later the Christian Democratic Party) in the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1981. Kevin Ryan (rugby)
Kevin James Ryan, born 26 August 1934 in Ipswich, Queensland is an Australian, former state parliamentarian and local mayor, barrister and advocate. In the 1950s and 1960s he was an Australian dual-code rugby international representative and had previously been a Queensland amateur boxing champion in 1958 and 1959, who trialled for the 1960 Olympics.
