1986–87 S.L. Benfica Season
The 1986–87 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 83rd season in existence and the club's 53rd consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football, covering the period from 1 July 1986 to 30 June 1987. Benfica competed domestically in the Primeira Divisão, Taça de Portugal and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira, and participated in the Cup Winners' Cup after winning the Taça de Portugal in the previous season. Following a close-call title race in the past season, Benfica sought to win the title that escaped since 1984. Only small adjustments were made to the squad, a new forward, Chiquinho Carlos, and two new centre-backs, Dito and Edmundo, countered the loss of Nené. Despite a slow start, by early November, Benfica was leading the league by two points after six consecutive wins. João Santos (chairman)
João Maria dos Santos Júnior (3 December 1914 – 15 February 2005), commonly known as João Santos, was a Portuguese businessman who served as the 28th president of sports club S.L. Benfica, succeeding Fernando Martins. Born on 3 December 1914 in Lisbon, Santos was elected president of Benfica on 27 March 1987. Chiquinho Carlos
Francisco Carlos (born 26 April 1963), known as Chiquinho Carlos, is a Brazilian retired footballer who played as a forward. He spent 11 years of his professional career in Portugal (21 in total in the country), amassing Primeira Liga totals of 271 matches and 70 goals over nine seasons and representing mainly Benfica, Vitória de Guimarães and Braga. Club career Born in Taquaritinga, São Paulo, Chiquinho Carlos started playing with Botafogo Futebol Clube (SP) and Clube de Regatas do Flamengo. Portimonense Sporting Clube is a Portuguese sports club based in Portimão. Founded on 14 August 1914, it is most notable for its professional football team, which currently plays in the Primeira Liga, the top flight of Portuguese football. Michael Manniche
Michael Manniche (born 17 July 1959) is a Danish former footballer who played as a centre forward. Even though he played professionally for four clubs in his country, he was best known for his spell with Benfica in Portugal. Football career Born in Copenhagen, Frederiksberg Municipality, Manniche started his career with Brønshøj Boldklub in 1977, signing for Hvidovre IF three years later and helping it to the Danish Cup in 1980 and the Danish Championship in the following year; in August he made his debut with Denmark, appearing as a second-half substitute in a friendly with Nordic neighbours Finland (2–1 win) – in total, he would win 11 caps in six years, but did not attend any major international tournament.
