1986 WAFL Season
The 1986 WAFL season was the 102nd season of the various incarnations of the West Australian Football League. It was the last season before the introduction of the West Coast Eagles in the VFL which would relegate the WAFL to a second-level league from 1987, and already all WAFL clubs were in severe financial difficulties as attendances were stagnant at best since 1970 and the financial power of wealthy VFL clubs drew most top players away and left below-market transfer fees as WAFL clubs’ inadequate main income source. There was also controversy over an attempt to play the Round 7 match between West Perth and Claremont on Mother's Day (11 May) which was vigorously opposed by young families, and the game was played on the Saturday, and the WAFL admitted mid-season that changes to its schedules with more matches in major rural centres and matches at night at the WACA were needed to counter the competition's dwindling appeal.Marsh, David; ‘More Games in WA Towns’; ''The West ... Mick Rea
Michael Desmond Rea (born 10 December 1956) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and Perth in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). Recruited from Edithvale-Aspendale, Rea made three appearances with Melbourne late in the 1978 VFL season, all of which they lost. He wasn't kept on Melbourne's list the following year and joined Perth, with whom he would be a prolific forward until 1988, except for a brief stint with Mines Rovers in Collie during the 1984 season. Darrell Panizza
Darrell Peter Panizza (born 11 March 1959 in Bunbury, Western Australia) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and the now-defunct Woodville Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) during the 1980s and 1990s. He also represented and coached Western Australia in interstate football. Playing career Claremont Panizza joined Claremont in 1979 from the Albany Royals and played in WAFL premiership teams in 1981, 1991 and 1993. He retired having played 274 matches in two stints, the first between 1979 and 1986; and the second between 1990 and 1995. He holds the record for the most games played at Claremont. Laurie Keene
Lawrence Kimberley Brett "Laurie" Keene (born 2 January 1961) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the West Coast Eagles in the VFL/AFL. Tall and athletic, Laurie Keene was recruited to West Coast from Subiaco, where he had been a member of premiership sides in 1986 and 1988. He could play as a key position forward or in the ruck and had topped Subiaco's goalkicking in 1985 with 70 goals as well as winning their 'Fairest and best' award in 1986. He kicked West Coast's first goal (and score) in VFL/AFL football. His career at West Coast was often interrupted by injury, most notably an Achilles tendon injury which ended his VFL/AFL career, but he had a solid debut season with 25 goals, which included a then club record haul of six against Carlton at Princes Park. Haydn Bunton, Jr
Haydn Austin Bunton (born 5 April 1937) is a former Australian rules footballer and coach. The son of the legendary Haydn Bunton Sr., Bunton Jr. played for and in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), as well as and in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL). Bunton was regarded as a tough and skilful player in both South Australia and Western Australia, but it was as a coach that he cemented a reputation alongside his father as one of Australian football's greatest identities. Craig Edwards (Australian Footballer)
Craig Edwards (born 25 April 1961) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for East Perth and South Fremantle in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). Edwards won the 1989 Sandover Medal as the best player in the competition and was named as one of the top 25 WAFL players of the 25 years from 1987 to 2012. Career Edwards was born in Mt Lawley, Western Australia and grew up in Bayswater. He attended Hillcrest Primary School and John Forrest Secondary College. He played football for the East Perth-Highgate Junior Football Club. He started playing colts football for East Perth in 1977, making his senior debut in 1979 in an Escort Cup match in Melbourne at VFL Park. He then played three games for East Perth before being dropped back to the reserves, and a further 70 games over the next four seasons. Robert Wiley
Robert John Wiley (born 24 March 1955) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Perth Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and for the Richmond Football Club and West Coast Eagles in the Victorian Football League (VFL). An inaugural member of the West Australian Football Hall of Fame, Wiley is regarded as one of the finest rovers of his era. He later coached Perth and , and was an assistant coach at West Coast. Craig Starcevich
Craig Starcevich (born 16 May 1967) is a former Australian rules footballer who played in the VFL/AFL. He is the only person in Australian rules football history to win both an AFL and an AFL Women’s premiership, having won the latter as coach. He currently works as the Brisbane Lions women's team coach and AFL Queensland Female Football High Performance Manager. He was recruited from East Perth, whom he played 37 games for after he won the 1986 F. D. Book Medal for being judged their best and fairest player. On the back of this, he was recruited to Collingwood in the VFL. Starcevich made his VFL debut in 1987 with the Collingwood Football Club. Kevin Bryant
Kevin Ronald Bryant (born 8 July 1955) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) and North Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He also represented Western Australia in State of Origin football. Career Bryant was the centre half-back in East Perth's 1978 WANFL premiership team and won their Best and Fairest award the same year. He came to North Melbourne in 1979 and late in the season kicked three goals in their Qualifying Final win over Collingwood at the MCG. Greg Brehaut
Gregory John Brehaut (1 August 1946 – 19 February 1993) was an Australian rules football player and coach who played with the Perth Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) and the Woodville Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Playing mainly as a wingman, he also represented Western Australia in 16 interstate matches, and later coached the East Perth Football Club between 1983 and 1986, before dying in 1993 at the age of 46 from a heart attack.
