1986 UCLA Bruins Football Team
The 1986 UCLA Bruins football team was an American football team that represented the University of California, Los Angeles during the 1986 NCAA Division I-A football season. In their 11th year under head coach Terry Donahue, the Bruins compiled an 8–3–1 record (5–2–1 Pac-10), finished in a tie for second place in the Pacific-10 Conference, and were ranked #12 in the final AP Poll. The Bruins went on to defeat BYU in the 1986 Freedom Bowl. On November 1, 1986, UCLA's defense scored three touchdowns against Oregon State. UCLA's offensive leaders in 1986 were quarterback Matt Stevens with 1,869 passing yards, running back Gaston Green with 1,405 rushing yards, and wide receiver Flipper Anderson with 675 receiving yards. Terry Donahue
Terrence Michael Donahue (June 24, 1944 – July 4, 2021) was an American football coach and executive. He served as the head coach at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) from 1976 to 1995, compiling a record of 151–74–8. His 151 wins are the most in UCLA Bruins football, UCLA Bruins history, and his 98 wins in the Pac-10 Conference—now known as the Pac-12 Conference—remain the most in the conference's history. Donahue's Bruins won five Pac-10 titles and appeared in four Rose Bowl Game, Rose Bowls, winning three. He became the first head coach to win a bowl game in seven consecutive seasons. Donahue played college football for UCLA as an undersized defensive tackle. He left coaching after the 1995 season to become a college football color commentator. 1986 Arizona Wildcats Football Team
The 1986 Arizona Wildcats football team represented the University of Arizona during the 1986 NCAA Division I-A football season. They were coached by Larry Smith in his seventh and final season. The Wildcats ended the season with a 9–3 record (5–3 in Pac-10) and won the Aloha Bowl against North Carolina for their first bowl win ever. A major highlight of the season was a 34–17 upset victory over rival Arizona State, that denied ASU an unbeaten season and chance at a potential national championship. The Long Beach State 49ers football team represented California State University, Long Beach from the 1955 through 1991 seasons. The 49ers originally competed as an Independent before joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association in 1958.
