The 11th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada between September 4 and September 13, 1986. ''The Decline of the American Empire'' by Denys Arcand was selected as the opening film. It won People's Choice Award at the festival and later got nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at Oscars. The Decline Of The American Empire
''The Decline of the American Empire'' (french: Le Déclin de l'empire Américain) is a 1986 Canadian sex comedy-drama film directed by Denys Arcand and starring Rémy Girard, Pierre Curzi and Dorothée Berryman. The film follows a group of intellectual friends from the Université de Montréal history department as they engage in a long dialogue about their sexual affairs, touching on issues of adultery, homosexuality, group sex, BDSM and prostitution. A number of characters associate self-indulgence with societal decline. The film was a box office success in Canada and internationally and received good reviews. It won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, nine Genie Awards, including Best Motion Picture, and was the first Canadian film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Tom Moore (born August 6, 1943) is an American theatre, television, and film director. Born in Meridian, Mississippi, Moore graduated from West Lafayette High School in 1961 and then earned a BA in Theatre from Purdue University in 1965, where he received the alumni distinction as both an Old Master and a Purdue Legacy. Moore began his career in the late 1960s, directing '' Loot'' at Brandeis University and ''Oh, What a Lovely War!'' at the State University of New York at Buffalo. His first major break came in 1972, when he directed the original Broadway production of '' Grease'', which eventually ran for 3,388 performances. Peter Greenaway, (born 5 April 1942) is a Welsh film director, screenwriter and artist. His films are noted for the distinct influence of Renaissance and Baroque painting, and Flemish painting in particular.
