1986 Sun Belt Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1986 Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament was held February 27–March 1 at the Birmingham–Jefferson Civic Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Jacksonville upset hosts UAB in the championship game, 70–69, to win their second Sun Belt men's basketball tournament. The Dolphins, in turn, received an automatic bid for the 1986 NCAA tournament. They were joined in the tournament by fellow Sun Belt members Old Dominion, UAB, and Western Kentucky, all of whom received at-large bids. Format There were no changes to the existing tournament format. All eight conference members were placed into the initial quarterfinal round and each team was seeded based on its regular season conference record. 1985–86 Jacksonville Dolphins Men's Basketball Team
The 1985–86 Jacksonville Dolphins men's basketball team represented Jacksonville University as members of the Sun Belt Conference during the 1985–86 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Dolphins, led by 5th-year head coach Bob Wenzel, played their home games at Jacksonville Memorial Coliseum in Jacksonville, Florida. After finishing third in the Sun Belt regular season standings, Jacksonville won the conference tournament to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as No. 8 seed in the Midwest region. Bob Wenzel
Bob Wenzel (born October 4, 1949) is a former American college basketball coach and broadcaster for the Big Ten Network, ESPN, CBS Sports and Fox Sports. Biography College playing/Coaching career Wenzel graduated from Rutgers University in 1971 with a degree in history, and headed to the University of Utah for his graduate work. In 1973, he earned his master's degree in education from Utah. While at Utah, Wenzel began his coaching career as a graduate assistant. Upon graduation he moved back east and became an assistant coach at Yale, staying there for one season. He moved on to Duke in 1975, staying with the team through 1980 and playing an important role in the team's run to the 1978 Final Four. After one season as an assistant at South Carolina, Wenzel was hired by Jacksonville University as its head coach. Otis Smith (basketball)
Otis Fitzgerald Smith (born January 30, 1964) is an American former professional basketball player. He played college basketball for Jacksonville. Early years Smith was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida and was a star athlete at Forrest High School, graduating in 1982. College Smith played at Jacksonville University from 1982 to 1986 and earned a degree in marketing and management. He became the only player in school history to tally more than 1,700 points and 900 rebounds in his collegiate career. In 1986, he was named the Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament MVP. His jersey was retired at Jacksonville University in 2002. The 1985–86 UAB Blazers men's basketball team represented the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a member of the Sun Belt Conference during the 1985–86 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. This was head coach Gene Bartow's 8th season at UAB, and the Blazers played their home games at BJCC Coliseum. They finished the season 25–11, 9–5 in Sun Belt play and lost in the championship game of the Sun Belt tournament. 1986 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1986 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 13, 1986, and ended with the championship game on March 31 in Dallas, Texas. A total of 63 games were played. Louisville, coached by Denny Crum, won the national title with a 72–69 victory in the final game over Duke, coached by Mike Krzyzewski. Pervis Ellison of Louisville was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Louisville became the first team from outside a power conference to win the championship since the expansion to 64 teams, and remains one of only two teams to do so (the other team was UNLV in 1990). The Sun Belt Conference women's basketball tournament has been played every year since the 1982-83 academic year. The winner of the tournament is guaranteed an automatic berth into the NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament. In 2007, the Sun Belt received an at-large berth, as Louisiana–Lafayette (regular season champ of the West Division) received an invite to the national tournament despite losing in the conference tournament final. The following year, the Sun Belt received an at-large berth again, as Middle Tennessee State received an invite to the national tournament. In 2010, it happened again, as Little Rock received an at-large bid, having entered the conference tourney as a #1 seed, before losing to Middle Tennessee in double overtime.
