1986 Michigan Gubernatorial Election
The 1986 Michigan gubernatorial election was held on November 4. The Democrats nominated incumbent Governor James Blanchard. The Republicans nominated Wayne County executive William Lucas, who made history by being the first African American nominee for either major party for Governor of Michigan. Blanchard was re-elected, winning the election with 68.1% of the vote. This was the last time Kent County, home to Michigan's second largest city, Grand Rapids, voted for a Democratic governor until Gretchen Whitmer won it in 2018. As of , this was the last time a Democrat won Livingston County in a gubernatorial election, as well as the last time a male Democrat was elected Governor of Michigan. James Johnston Blanchard (born August 8, 1942) is an American retired attorney, diplomat, and politician who served as the 45th governor of Michigan from 1983 to 1991. A member of the Democratic Party, Blanchard previously served in the United States House of Representatives from 1975 to 1983, and later as the as United States Ambassador to Canada from 1993 to 1996. Early life and education Blanchard was born in Detroit, Michigan on August 8, 1942. He grew up and attended the public schools in Ferndale, Michigan. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Michigan State University in 1964 and an MBA in 1965. Blanchard received a Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1968 and was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan soon after. Grand Rapids is a city and county seat of Kent County in the U.S. state of Michigan. At the 2020 census, the city had a population of 198,917 which ranks it as the second most-populated city in the state after Detroit. Colleen House (March 17, 1952 – December 24, 2022) was an American politician who served as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives, from 1974 to 1976 and 1983 to 1986. Early life and education House was born in Bay City, Michigan, on March 17, 1952, to parents James Daniel and Kathleen House. House graduated from All Saints Central High School in 1969. House earned a B.A. in political science from Michigan State University in 1973. Career House was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in a special election in 1974. Dick Chrysler
Richard "Dick" Chrysler (born April 29, 1942) is an Amway distributor and former politician from the U.S. state of Michigan. Chrysler was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and graduated from Brighton High School in Brighton, Michigan. He became vice-president of Hurst Performance and the founder and president of Cars and Concepts (which bought out Hurst), and Richard Chrysler Industries (RCI). In 1986, he campaigned for governor of Michigan as a Republican, but lost a hard-fought primary to Wayne County Executive William Lucas. Chrysler lost his first campaign for the United States House of Representatives to Bob Carr in 1992, in a race described as "the most expensive Congressional race in Michigan that cycle."
